Which "vintage pack" is the most bang for the buck POST 1980 softparade!

I am gonna go buy a handful of packs today. 3 weeks ago I bought 5 1980 topps packs, pulled a henderson PSA 7, and PSA 10 1/4 Larry Gura. 2 weeks bought 6 packs of 85 Donruss which yielded PSA 8 Gary redus (did I miss something on this card, resub!), PSa 9 Puckett, and Psa 9 Clemens. I also bought 5 1978 packs and....I never knew there were so many commons, pulled a Forrester PSa 9...o/c image What about 85 topps? I bought some 81 topps and got a molitor o/c with a wax stain and no decent commons. Discuss!

    78 Rack Box break

Above is the link to my recent box break. I still have another unopened box that has 5 really nice packs with HOF'ers showing. I waver about busting it every week. The ping pong ball is bouncing around my head constantly. I am grading the first box first to see what happens. CDSnuts had excellent results from a box he got from me!

This is partly for your information and partly bragging, but you may want to try the lowly 1981 Topps Stickers. There are always unopened boxes on ebay for $10-$20 delivered. I had a box in the back of my closet since 1981, finally busted the packs, and will end up with close to $500 in sales by the time I've sold all of the ones I got graded. I got two 1/1 PSA 10 HOFers and there are still several more to be had. More generally, relatively unknown or unpopular sets are dirt cheap but the player set collectors still need the cards for their master sets.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

Try 1981 Fleer and Donruss (and 1981 Fleer Star Stickers). You can get unopened boxes for less than a dollar a pack, and even if QC is bad and the cards are not gradeable, you can make your money back selling them raw - the sets are chock full of HOFers.

Thanks for the tips guys, I am going in about a half hour, live pack bust! I have been scanning all morning, I dug out some nice vintage stuff, scans posted later today hopefully! I found a large tupperware filled with goodies earlier this week, highlights included a Clemens auto ball, clemens auto 85 topps rc, mays VINTAGE auto not "vittt wittt" like he signs nowadays! 52 topps wrapper from Mr. Mint's find, and a bunch of other treats!
  • After reading a thread about Fleer 81 stickers(last month?) I started watching those and the Topps also. I just received a box (100 packs) for $10 delivered. I ripped open one but all those unopened packs from my youth just makes me happy unopened. I will open them soon but I look at the .15 cents price and it seems so long ago. I will also get some Fleer boxes because I like the design better. On a side note I came to these boards only looking for info to sell some cards I had purchased at a garage sale. I have not collected since the early 80's and sold all my cards off at that time. After reading the boards I am now looking to start a 1978 set because it seems very affordable and that is one of the sets I used to have. So thanks for getting me back into the hobby and all the fun reading.

    Thanks Jim

92 Bowman is always fun and almost off the radar right now. 83 Fleer is cheap and has a decent design with 3 HOFer RCs. I did really well with some 91 Topps Desert Shield packs I got from ebay, but they're very pricy. 97 Bowman Chrome has a ton of RCs with HOF potential.

Somebody please rip a box of 1984 Fleer baseball - I need the Yaz #412 card for my Yaz set...

I also agree about 1983 Topps baseball - but, I like the 1985 products a bit more (all baseball), primarily for the Clemens cards.

He may be, but his cards are some of the best RC's of the eighties to get, in my opinion. Dan Duquette made a big mistake letting him leave - I can't really blame him for going after what was said about him back then.

'81 Fleer has probably been the most fun for me recently. The BBCexchange sells them for $35 a box.

38 packs per box, 17 cards were pack. Good value for the money.
