Info on 1954 Willie Mays card?

Can anyone know the story behind this card? Can someone give me the Pop report and SMR value?

    13 total graded, 7 7's, a 6 and an 8, the rest being 4's and 5's.
They were issued by the New York Journal American (a daily newspaper) and contain players from the 3 NY teams.
It's not listed in SMR online. I always liked the set but it's not very popular- not great image quality or paper stock, and they were issued during the time of the greatest regional sets of all time, like StahlMeyers, Wilsons, RedHearts and Redmans, etc.
Great player selection- Mantle, Robinson, Mays, and the rest of the stars of the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Not that it adds a lot to the discussion but the checklist for the set stops at 59. This is kind of an odd number - also, you notice a serial number on the card...this was a contest run by the now extinct pub and these cards could be picked up at newsstands when purchasing a paper - it is theorized that somewhere there is an uncatalogued number 60 which would be like the T206 Wagner of the issue. So, start the searching!

  • ajw,

Do you have a PSA membership? It is well worth the $100. My membership has paid big dividends beyond the $100 a year and not just in cash flow. You won't be sorry.
