Question for veteran Merc lovers

Greetings!

I recently acquired a set of fifteen raw Mercs (1941 P, D, S through 1945 P, D, S) in a white Lucite holder manufactured by Capital. Can anyone tell me the likely age of the Capital Lucite holder? When were such holders first marketed? Are they still marketed?

In addition, can anyone venture a guess as to why Capital made these Merc holders for 1941 - 1945 rather than for the standard "Short Set" years (1940 - 1945)? Perhaps this holder was made and marketed prior to the advent of "Short Set" collecting? If so, when did the Merc "Short Set" become a goal of collectors?

Thanks!
"Coin collecting problem"? What "coin collecting problem"?

    Hello, Good Morning and Welcome.

As far as I know the Merc Short Set has always been from 1941 thru 1945. It is that way in the NGC Registry but I do see that PCGS has it from 1940 thru 1945 which actually makes more sense.

I have collected Mercs since the early 80's and the Lucite holders were around then. How much before hand I do not know. The first complete set that was put together was actually stored in a lucite holder that contained all of the dates. I guess you could say even back then I had my coins in plastic. I am sure, reasonably so, that these may still be made. If not someone will correct me.

    Cheers.

  • I'm looking for the now-obsolete Capital Plastic Mercury 1934-1945 holder. Does anyone have one (empty) to offer?

  • Capital Plastics have discontinued the "long-short set" 1934-1945. Sure would like to display my raw duplicates.
