Suggestions for removing "chads"

Anyone have suggestions for removing the "chads" or "bat ears" on the 80's cards? Seems like it is almost impossible to do without damaging the corner. Maybe an Xacto knife?

You're asking how to trim an already-trimmed card so it doesn't look so obvious? That's how the "bat ears" got there in the first place. Why would anyone trim a 1980s card to start with. There are so many perfect ones on the market and still in unopened cases. Just buy PSA 9 or 10 examples of the cards in question.
  • I think he is actually referring to those little pieces of brown cardboard that often stick out on the corners of topps cards from the late 1970s-early1990s. Due to the dulling of the blades i guess. removing these from the corners would be no different then removing a rough cut wich is altering a card from its original production and would result in receiving the card back as either trimmed or altered this practice would definetly be card doctoring.image

I don't think psa frowns very heavily towards having this pieces on the cards do they?

I have seen some high graded 80's cards w/ small pieces of cardboard still attached.

If it doesn't bother you too much, leave it and trust the psa gods to smile upon your submission.

Glynparson hit right on the head of what I was talking about. I opened a 1986 Topps baseball set but about 1/3 of the cards have a little thread of cardboard on the upper right corner from presumably dull cutting blade at the factory. Thanks for the insight and suggestions.

Does anyone remember 1988 Score baseball and when the the first release product was terrible for the corners having extra material on them? Is that what he is refering to?

I agree with Steve. It's not like you can't find 1986 Topps in perfect condition elsewhere, even a complete set, for fairly cheap. This set might have been cut with a dull wire and have aesthetic issues, but right now it's in factory condition. If you take an X-acto knife to 'em, they join the ranks of altered cards. They don't want to be there!
