Homemade Greyside toning... (Dial-up warning!)

Thirty-eight years ago my uncle pulled three of each type of the centennial coins from bank wrappers and handed them to me. I put them in a plastic box and padded each type with cotton and paper towels. Over the years the box has travelled with me, the coins sliding against each other and generally getting ruined. But for me this is one of those childhood treasures that is worth far more than the coins' values. I noticed the box today and decided to see what they looked like. Here's the reverses of one of the sets:

No way that would be considered artificial toning, in my opinion. Nice set!

AT should actually be DAT - Deceitful Accelerated Toning. I like the bobcat and salmon colors best.

Well, in my defense I was 12 at the time and it seemed like a pretty good way to keep them nice and shiny. image

Vern, I wasn't being accusatory toward you in wrapping them in the tissues.

My grandmother worked at a bank back in the 1960s and she gave me one of those Mexican Olympic 25 pesos in the "neat" PVC wallet......any guesses on what it looks like today.......she also gave me one of those big Churchill crowns....it has an inscription in the fields signed by someone named, Wybrit....image

Vern, I was just kidding too. The coins look nice! I also tended to put my nice coppers in toilet paper to protect them, and now all those bright shiny jewels have some interesting toning on them, 20 years later. But, well, there's a learning curve for everybody, and I've got a long way to go yet!

I knew it was all in fun. But it's interesting the results of ignorance vs. an Easy Bake oven isn't it? image
