Wax from the Past - And so are the Prices!

Since wax is a hot topic right now, I thought I'ld post a scan from an ad from the BBCKid Mark Murphy from 1992. These are prices you will never see again! Back then, this was a lot of money to me to spend on a pack - shows you what I know!

Here is a Darren Prince ad from the same era. I've never seen a '51 Bowman pack since then....

<< <i>'52 Topps packs have sold for $5 - 8 k in the past few years depending on the grade. A high grade '54 pack would probably sell for $5-6k +.

Remember when he had a bunch of 61F basketball? I wish I had picked up a few packs - price was very fair!
<< <i>Does this mean investing in an 86-87 fleer basketball wax box is a good thing, seeing how they will sell for even more in the future?

There is still plenty of this stuff out there compared to the packs that we are talking about. It could take a while since it's really not that old and Jordan doesn't have the attraction he did a while back. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see the packs drop before they climb. You used to be able to get a pack for about 100-150$ - then they jumped to the 300-450$ range. Unless you are buying these graded, I wouldn't buy them unless from someone really reputable like BBCExchange, BBCKid or Ryan Sutter (who I believe used to advertise in SCD?).

Excellent post - I bought an unopened 1962 Topps Civil War News cello pack around the same time, '92 or '93, for 50 bucks. They're going for 4 to 6 times that now, and, even at that, today's prices are probably gonna look like a bargain in 10 years.

You bet Mark!
It was an area that I just couldn't get attached to - and I'm not talking about the appreciation as much as the pride, as a collector, of having something that is truly becoming extinct - the 52 wax pack!
I wasted money on so much crap! Murphy had some pristine packs over the years! Oh, and BTW, having it appreciate like all get out is OK with me too!

He discovered a few cases of 61 F, I believe. I use to save his ads because the stuff he had was so incredibly cool and rare.

<< <i>Another question about vintage from a newbie, but what would a 1 card pack (if they even exist) of '51 Bowman go for now?

Probably $2,500 - $3,000+. As a rule, penny packs haven't increased at the same rate as nickel or cello packs. More of them stayed unopened.
<< <i>Has anyone purchased an OLD pack and hit the big one? >>

An interesting story in SCD years ago involved a guy who bought a nickle 52T pack and pulled an Andy Pafko card. He then sent it to PSA and it came back PSA 10. It was put up for auction and sold for 83,870.
He paid around 2000 grand for the pack if I remember correctly.
