What happened to all the 70 Topps Basketball??

PROMETHIUS88PROMETHIUS88 Posts: 2,885 ✭✭✭✭✭
I took a couple years off working on my 70-71 topps basketball set and just got back into it again a few months back. Now, all of a sudden, there are hardly any on ebay. Used to be no problem to find a PSA 8 Maravich rookie for about $350. Now that I am ready to buy one, they are non-existent. Pop is like 175 in 8 and 16 or so in 9. Now I know that there are only 50 registered sets and probably only about 20 of them have the Maravich. Where are all the others? Not only that, but even the commons that I still need have dried up. (currently have 95 of 175 and am #20 on the registry) It's a real buzz kill!!!
Please....if you are hoarding them....set them freeeeee!!!

  • The PSA 8's have been selling so low that I imagine people are reluctant to set them free... aside from the Havlicek sp, other sp's, maravich, riley and kareem and a very few others... the PSA 8's seem to be selling for 40% of what they were a couple years ago...
I got under $20 for frazier, monroe, debusschere, playoffs, etc... got a whopping $14 for my psa 8 1970 Bill Bradley! YIKES! it was centered too! Got $10 for reed all star psa 8... hawkins and his all star psa 8... man it bites for sellers~
anyway... that mnight explain the hoarding.

  • hey tim,

there has been a bit of a dry spell on 70 topps basketball on ebay. high-end stars and short prints, however, still command high $$, often well above smr, when they do show up. If you are interested, I do have an extra maravich psa 8, which I'd sell or trade depending on what you have. (I paid more than $350 for it, however, though you may be able to still find one elsewhere for that price).
You can email me at susymatt2@aol.com. (my set is listed as "mike's big boys."

If anyone has a 70/71 Topps #108-Cunningham All-Star (even raw), please let me know. I'd be interested in buying.

    Thanks,
    James
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
  • I have been building a graded 1970-71 basketball set over the past year and tracking eBay during the same time frame. I too have been a bit frustrated by what's available recently, but every now and then, you have a week where there are quite a few of them, mostly 8s, being auctioned. The prices for the 8s tend to be all over the board. As for the Maravich in particular, I was fortunate that one I had in a raw sent ended up grading out as an 8. I haven't been tracking the prices of the Maravich 8s closely, but $400 to $500 seems like the going rate. With the current registry special apparently open to tallboy cards, I may get more cards in that raw set graded, as I'm getting tired of the healthy bidding on the SPs and high end stars.
  • thanos,

which registry special are you referring to? I'd love to be able to take advantage of one but haven't seen anything that this set would qualify for.

YD you must have hit a bad week...those are some weak prices. I'd be willing to pay AT LEAST $15 for a Bradley PSA 8!! The prices have been all over when they were around. Hal Greer #155 8 sold for $35 or so and yet I was able to pick up the #108 SP Cunningham AS 8 for $21.50(sorry Akbar). Also got #80 Wilkins sp in 8 for $58 which i feel is still a steal compared to what they were couple years back. I won't even mention the Neal Walk sp 8 i got for $25!! Then i lose out on the Hondo #10 sp at $411...last one i remember was about $800. The last couple Maravich 8's were anywhere between $380-$480. I would be in the ballpark at the $400 level or so!
I don't see many posts out here on basketball, so it's nice to see a few of the tall boy collectors come out of the shadows!!
Remember!! The first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem!!!!!
