How much would this defect affect the grade?

image

How much would the "smudge" or "stain" on the right hand side of this card affect the grade?

I would think that would be significant enough to prevent the card from getting into a 9 or better holder.

I agree, no better than 8. I recently submitted a card that was flawless in every way except for a similar smudge on the border. To be honest, the smudge was not even half the size of the one on your Brett. It received an 8. Still, your card is a nice one and this is only my opinion. Others may feel differently.

    Thanks for the responses.

Also, it is difficult to see from the scan, but there is also a small "indentation" on the surface a little bit below the smudge.

If possible, I would really like to hear other opinions.

    Thanks

  • From the scan, it looks like it is already in a holder...

If it is, what is its current grade, and who was it graded by?

    You are correct.

However, I would like to get other opinions before I show more.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if it was in a 9 holder. I think it would be an 8.

yup seen this definitly seems to have the 10 image but really should be in an 8 holder imo should grade better than a 7 but thats my grading scale. So bring it lets see the 10 lol.

Ive seen it before and had cards come back in 10 holders with the stain. They didnt leave my house with the stain only thing I concur is it happens in the sealing room somehow. Not sure if the slabs are glued together or what.

I would not have sent in something that looks like that. Now I am curious what the holder says. If it's a 10 then I have thousands of 10's at home!

    Larry:

Like I said that card might not have had the stain when it left the owners house. Ive had it happen 3 times out 5-10 thousand i graded.

Gator5- So I am clear, are you suggesting PSA could have traded cards once it arrived in Newport? I have thought that several times! "How could I have sent in a 198_ ____ (insert star name) with a dinged corner (or stain or whatever)."
  • Any chance that the stain is not on the card but on the inside of the holder?

Could the grader have let the grease from his cheese burger drip on the card after he graded it but before it was slabbed?

That's surprising to me for a GEM Mint card. Oh well. It's still very nice.

    Larry,

No Im not saying psa switched the cards at all. Ive had this happen to me as well but only 3 times submitting over 5000 cards. From what I have gathered its a a greasy spot or oil. So my thinking would be the sealing machine because I dont think it could happen anywhere else. I really dont think the grader let it roll I think it was sealed and shipped with the stain occuring at the sealer.

If anyone knows how the sealer works Id love to put that into my memory bank as well. Of course I could be wrong but I know I submitted some really hiend 81s and they didnt have the stain when they left. In fact one was a molitor, most blazing card Id ever seen comes back with the stain, so thats what Ive put together in the past.

It's pretty disappointing to me, because I really wanted to start a Brett collection on the registry. I haven't had a good collecting focus for a while, and I thought this would be the best way to have fun collecting again.

Not now, however. I just don't trust the grading. I've always had doubts in the back of my mind about it, but I now know for sure.

I'll probably just put it back on the 'bay.

This is a common occurrence in Topps cards (with the white borders). I have opened several packs and it appears to originate in the printing process?
