The current high bidder has not bought or sold anything over $40 in last few months. All of a sudden he has $42,000 to spend???

Just curious - what would someone do with that?

Hey, come on in and look at this broken piece of car I got!

I agree. If I had that kind of money to burn, I would much rather own a '52 Mantle in PSA 8. Then I could say come see what I have. image

According to the story I heard on sports radio this weekend, the seller(s) are members of the "Panther Racing" pit crew (the car in which the fender piece was imbedded), and since proceeds are going to charity, that is why the bidding is going higher than you would normally see.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

The description says that the wing was "burried deep into Enge's car and was not discovered until Panther Racing personnel found it after returning Enge's car to the shop for repair."

Is that true? They didn't know it was there? It looks like a pretty big piece of metal to go unnoticed when lodged in a state-of-the-art race car, doesn't it? Maybe that's why they didn't win the race...they didn't notice the three foot hunk of metal stuck where it wasn't supposed to be.

They showed the autographed version and talked about the charity auction during the race on Saturday night. As a racing fan, it would be a cool thing to have hanging on the wall, but $42k is a bit steep.

    I guess it's a good tax deduction.

I wonder if Rahal and Letterman want it back.
