a couple of ANACS questions

First how tough are they on grading world coins? Are they tougher, looser,or about the same then the other services? Also how hard are they on proof coins? Finally on EBAY do ANACS world coins bring less than NGC coins?image

With the exception of Canadian coins, I find ANACS to be more conervative than the other TPGs.

Of the coins I have seen and own, ANACS grades stricter on world coins than NGC does and thus I would pay more for them on Ebay.

Of note, my uncle sees a NGC slab and automatically knocks 4 whole grade points off every coin. And this is sort of wearing off on me too since I am starting to do this too at coin shows now image

Are there others who similarly discount NCG grades? I've noticed some leniency myself, but since I buy for my own pleasure and not resale I don't buy for the slab grade so much....

Just be careful. Both of these outfits can grade well and just miss the boat completely. I tend to believe ANACS is tougher... I have submitted some to them that I thought were in the 65-66 range and they are tough in the high end.

image So do ANACS coins usually bring more or less money on EBAY then NGC?Also does the conservative grading show in the prices realized on ANACS coins?

I think this all depends on the coin and how desireable it is right now. Some coins go for crazy money, while others go for pennies.
  • I have used both ANACS and NGC, and they both do a decent job, but can be off the mark now and then, just like the rest of us......image

I really am not the person to ask about ebay. Your question about resale really is not dependant upon the plastic, but what is in it.

I have not seen ANACS sell particularly well or particularly badly for British coins. I have been very happy with the coins I have bought in their slabs, however, but I avoid net graded pieces.

It really does all boil down to what is inside the plastic.

For Darkside I prefer ANACS over any other TPG by far. That being said, ANACS is not infalable so use the old saying..."Buy the coin not the plastic!"

ANACS grades with a microscope (literally.) I trust them implicity to detect cleaned, whized, tooled or otherwise "futzed" with coins. On the other hand, they don't seem to give "bumps" for exceptional "eye appeal" and what might be "market acceptable" at PCGS or NGC often gets a NET grade at ANACS.
  • All of a sudden I think I won't be sending to ANACS.
