Any good box or pack breaks lately?

The box and pack break threads are always fun to read. I haven't really bought anything too great lately. My best pack break was a 1984 Topps rack pack that had two Don Mattingly rookies in it. One was in the first section of the pack and the other was in the last section of the rack pack.

Anybody else have any to share?

I busted a 78 Topps baseball rack box a month ago. Very nice! I still have a full unopened box left. I might sit on that one for a while.
Some really nice packs with HOF'ers showing.

I enjoyed your threads with the 1978 box breaks.

I love the racks with stars showing...I've got a 1978 Rack with a Murray RC on top that I'll probably hold onto forever. The Murray rookie that is showing is off centered 70/30, but it is still one of my favorite items in my collection.

I hope that was in circa 1987-88 when Donny was getting $35-40 for his Topps rookie.image

I busted a box of 94Sp the other night and got two really nice Faulk rc's as well as many other nice cards. These are really condition sensitive cards and most of them were in really great shape.

I'm in the process of busting an 86 vending case in the hopes of getting the last few stars without 10's. I don't think there ever will be a Ryan 10 because of the 10 I've pulled so for, the best t/b has been about 30/70...

It has become a bit of an arduous process, but seeing the perfect vending box pattern is always an awesome sight.

I busted 4 1980 topps wax boxes a couple of weeks ago. Invigorating to say the least.

I recently ordered 4 vending boxes from mickey's of same year, I did this solely for "bang for the buck" theory. I hope it pays off.

I don't know about other topps wax boxes, but w/ the 1980 packs I definitely saw patterns of certain commons then a HOF player following them. I have around 35+ cards from the 2160 cards that I intend on getting graded at Nationals. Ironically, from the 726-card set I am still missing 40 commons and a Nolan Ryan from having a completed set.

The 1980 sets' chipping, snowy printed cards, and severly overpopulated Mike Schmidt cards, makes high end card collecting a true challenge.

LOL on the 80 schmidts...i pulled at least 14 schmidt, lynn and carews from one wax box about 1 1/2 years ago... no 10's on any of them but 9's and 9oc's were a plenty...

it was a blast though, regardless.

i busted an 87f bkb wax box recently and i've got 80+ cards waiting to be mailed tomorrow. i've got several board members waiting on me to send scans of what i have remaining to fill their wantlists after i put together a raw set. the stickers seem to be the tougher than the regular cards.

    Thanks,

  • Not quite as exciting as some of these posts, but the other day I found a near complete vending box of 1986 FB from a card dealer in a local antique mall. I say near complete, because it was obvious all the BIG star cards and rookies were already picked, but the the rest of the cards, mostly commons, were great looking for 86's. I managed to upgrade about 1/2 my set and fill a few of the remaining holes. All for the princely sum of $5.

I'll take this deal any day of the week rather than hoping against hope of finding a dealer locally who handles individual commons for newer sets.

So, if any of you who are buying vending boxes need an outlet for what's left, after the stars are taken out (and potential PSA 10 commons), I'm only an email away. But please remember.....................I'm cheap. But surely it's gotta be better than throwing them away, doesn't it?

I've done similar things with 1985 and 1984 Topps FB as well.

  • I know a lot of guys aren't modern fans on here but I just busted a case of 2003 SPX football and I pulled this gem out.

    image

Actually did real well for it being an Upper Deck product.Figured I pulled between $1,300-$1,500 book value for the entire case.
    Other good hits included:

    Peyton Manning auto-$120.00
    Michael Vick patch-$150.00
    Carson Palmer Jsy/Auto rc-$200.00
    Willis McGahee Jsy/Auto rc-$125.00

I don't buy as much modern as I used to - but I love reading box and case breaks...keep 'em coming! Nice Leftwich card, also...

My most recent break was a 1978 vending box. I was quite pleased with the results, considering I bought the box on Ebay - and pulled 2 nice Murray RC's (both at least 8's), a smudge free Molitor (should 8 also), and beautiful mint cards of Yaz, Fisk, and Rice (9's at least for all).

Where did you get it from? There are some guys on ebay that are known for selling 86/87 reseals. Can't remember their names off hand but if I saw them I'd remember.

just purchased 2, i'm trying to get a feel for who's legit without buying graded.

this one came from sandiegowill and i have another one coming from sparky7676. the wax seal is loose.

    Thanks,

Will Hays is legit- I doubt he would knowingly sell tampered packs. Sometimes with the 86's someone will try to get a good look at the Sticker on the back and that will loosen the seal. Or maybe it's searched- only one way to find out. Also, if the seal is loose getting it graded is pointless as it probably won't come back any better than a 7. I'd either bust it or try and get a refund. The other guy looks a little shady to me. He buys an 86 Topps FB box for $390 then turns around and lists it in a few months knowing he's not going to get that much back? Plus he was an active buyer of graded cards. Let us know when the 2nd pack comes and what you think about it. I'm curious because this guy's stuff is going too cheap.

Those are nice Faulk cards! I remember in 94 going nuts trying to pull his cards!

Will Hays as an *sshole! He had a 1977 BVG 8.5 Mel Blount RC(as he had it listed). I e-mailed him just to let him know that it was not his rookie. His response:

All you guys are the same! You do know there is life outside your precious cards and outside of e-bay. Get a life![/

I was stunned! Needless to say I sniped his auction and won it for $16.50. Cracked it and sent it to PSA and came back a 9! I actually have it on e-bay right now.

Sorry for my rant, but as for Will Hays legit, I don't know, an *sshole definitley

Well I ripped a case($850.00)so my box cost was at about $60.00.I'm sure you could find single boxes for $70.00-$75.00 and maybe even cheaper.
With the price of some modern boxes and the decent crop of rookies in 2003 I thought it was a good rip for the money.
I always try to buy smart and get good value for my money.

the seal on the 86f bkb was actually not sealed. i've emailed gai to see if they will grade this as authentic without a grade. i've also emailed mr.hays to let him know as well. i'm still itching to open it... image

    Thanks,

Anyone busted a box 1979 baseball from BBC Exchange? Is $360.00 a good price? I've never busted much older stuff but this was my first year of buying cards and I'd love to give one a shot.
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
To me the 1979 Unopened material is over priced because you have almost no shot at pulling an Ozzie that will grade 9 or better, as about 97% of them are off center T/B. Not to say that you can't get a really nice Ryan, Reggie, Brett, etc......., but the box price is driven primarily by the big RC you can get. If you're really itching to bust something, the 1978 case fresh boxes are yielding great looking cards and you have a good shot at a nice Murray, Molitor, and all the rest. In my last box I got 5 PSA 10's, including Blyleven and Fingers. Even though I didn't pull a Murray or Molitor/Trammell, I still made almost $100 on the box without any great pulls. Or you could give the 1980 box a shot- 1 PSA 10 of any major star would almost pay for the box, and if you get a nice Henderson it's gravy. But then again, you can't beat the nostalgia of opening a box of the first year you collected, so go with your gut.

here's GAI's response to my pack from will hays. i've emailed this to will as well. he had mentioned he would honor a refund. i'll keep you posted.

this is probably common knowledge to most, but i wanted to ask gai and see if they had other ways to tell if a pack had been opened "all the way" vs coming loose in shipping.

    David,
If the seal is not fully intact it would be designated "popped seal" and not graded. If you have any other questions please feel free to email or call.

Did you guys ever get together and purchase that '78 Topps Baseball case? I was so anxious to hear your bust when I first heard you guys were considering this...
