  • Gemmy10....didn't that collection MSRP at around five grand? I bet a bunch of people took a bath on that one.

Actually it retailed for $6,000. YIKES. Many, including myself paid between $3,000-$4,000. And several people including myself took a bath. My only consolation is I have Set #7 which should carry some premium and I have one of the rarest Mystery Cards, Thurman Munson's "Cut" Signature card. I might be wrong but someday if they continue to break them up, the remaining sets will go up in value again.

Munson cut signatures are more and more common.

The sports card companies sure are smart marketing to yankee fans...they know they'll always have plenty of people willing to dump thousands into a supposed 'scarce' product.

Munson didn't sign much when he was alive. It's is very hard to find legitimate sigs. Just ask Joewoowoo about fakes.

My signature is a 10+ wouldn't you say? Knowing you, you will probably say the sig is sloppy.

Nice sig, waaaay better thatn the "..MAN MUNSON" which was posted he last week!

Yeah, I saw that one that joewoowoo posted. How sloppy it was.

Yeah you would think that a bunch of Munson stuff would show up, but it really hasn't. There can't be more than 8 or so since
2000. I don't think he is ever in legendary cuts. I know there is some product out where he shares a card with Joe Morgan..OUCH

Gemmy..I never knew you had set 7, thats really amazing...have you ever put it out into the market just to see what it might get?

Are the cards wrapped? I would love to see the #7 Mantle!

Kevin, you might have misunderstood me. I don't have a Mickey Mantle "Cut" Signature card #7/7. What I do have is Set #7/500. All the cards have a laser engraved 7 except for the "Mystery" card which is unique. The Mahogany Box is also #7 to match the cards.
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
yeah I know, but aren't he base cards also numbered all 7/XXX??

Yes, my set comes with the same 36 cards #7/500 except for the engraved number (10 Game Used Bat cards and 26 WS cards). So for instance, set #500 has all 36 cards with #500 as well as the box.

I didn't get Set #7 by accident as it had been opened and it came with the Munson "Mystery" card. It was a double bonanza and that is why I bought it. My Munson card is #2/2

Hey Kevin, you are into modern stuff. Do you think that since these sets have been broken up they have appreciation potential in the future (at least to get back to what I paid. LOL)? A lot were broken up initially but they have slowed over the last few years. My theory has always been that kids who wanted a set but their parents couldn't afford one might want to buy one when they grow up and can afford one. There are 4 Derek Jeter cards in every set, 3 WS cards and a Game Used Bat card.

First, that Munson card is perfection! And having the #7 set is really cool.

If most of the sets wind up being broken there is the appearance that the remaining "un"broken sets would be worth more. But, that's strictly a statement on supply with respect to scarcity. But, if no one really wants the set, the "demand" side of the equation is not met and the set will stay right where it is.

As you track the breakups, when it gets down to like 100, put out a full page ad in SCD that you are buying unopened sets. When they call, just say that your quota has been met already but "thanx for calling" - why? The appearance of the ad will "spark" tremendous interest in the set and people will think they are missing something! Thus, the price/demand will go up! image

    Again, great Munson.

Thanks. Mike. I have 3 sets. I plan on passing one each to my 2 kids when they are older to appreciate it. The 3rd set I will keep for my old age, and let them fight for it when I am gone. Or maybe I will sell it.

This was a landmark set and that will keep these from really taking a dive. The unfortunate part is that every year there are more and more
cut autos and Yankee stuff out there. Naturally there will be people who turn to those cards. I do believe that UD has put out 3 Yankee
themed sets since 2000, all of them failures.

....well then there is exqusite basketball....that stuff has tripled in value since UD's release.

    Keep us posted!

Of particular interest is the Dwayne Wade auto card...people are paying righteous bucks for the card.
Some are calling him the next Jordan. Like we haven't heard that one before?

This was a bit more unique in that it came in a beautiful mahogany box with an engraved serial number, but nonetheless it is a manufactured modern set. The box will also contibute to making it a hard set to put back together. Some people have bought the empty boxes and used them as a jewelry box, cigar box, you name it. I would honestly have to say I have become one of the experts on the set. Heck I might even be the only expert. LOL

I bought a pack at $440 and might have been able to get at least a couple more at that price. Now, $1200+ each easy... guess I shouldn't have been so eager to crack mine and a little more willing to put a serious burn on my plastic image

    joestalin,

Here is an example of the engraved serial number on the back of the card, #333/500 in this case:
