Portugal 1 escudo 1916

Here's one for Cladiator's beautiful design type set:

imageimage

Mintage of 1,405,000, second year of a two-year type. This design was only used on four types of Portuguese coins, the 10 centavo, 20 centavo, 50 centavo and escudo, minted from 1912-1916 in the early years of the republic. All of them are somewhat scarce in high grades.

Krause lists a value of 35.00 in XF and 70.00 in Unc. This one is a nice AU.

Nice, actually the coins of this "series" are found in high grades (esp. 10 and 50 centavos coins), i don't recall seeing any below VF and most of them are in XF condition (that's generally due to cleaning). The 20 centavos are scarce!

Beware with fakes of 1 escudo coins, there are many copies with the letters "ALP" near the denomination which sometimes people scratch off to pass as genuine.

    Bemvindo, Jose! image

I have been looking for one of these escudos for awhile, and this was the first one I've seen with nice original surfaces. As you said, most that I have seen in shows and shops look dull from cleaning. I would love to find a nice, true uncirculated example.

    BTW, are you in Portugal?

    Hi newsman,

Thanks for the welcome, and yes, I'm in Portugal.

Unfortunately, we and the Brazilian love to clean coins (Ooooh, shiny!), a true BU 1 escudo coin is very scarce, mine look about the same as yours. On the other hand 10 centavos and 50 centavos (mainly 1913 and 1916), have survived in coin rolls and are quite abundant in BU.
