I've got more medieval coins!

Okay i went to the London coin fair today and i picked up two coins. One for on of my sets, the other for... well i just liked it.

First and foremost i managed to nab this Henry VI annulet issue (1422-7) hammered silver halfpenny, minted in London. Nice portrait on this one, these coins are somewhat difficult to find well centred, with an average strike and most of the legends remaining. So all in all i don't think i did too badly there.

(Sorry about the darkness of the scan)

And then i went and bought this for £25, no idea what value it is actually worth. Philip IV of France Gros, Tournais mint.

(Yes the photo is the wrong way around on the reverse)

All opinions welcome, honest one's preferred, good or bad.

Err 'ish' Oli, yeah the green tinge ain't quite right.

The dark tone makes it hard to scan, if i make it brighter the image looks even worse, if i make it darker well you just can't see as much. But i try my best with my limited equipment. My picture capturing skills are truely lousy. image

I have a fondness for French coins, no idea where it came from. I got my mediocre Louis XVI coins and the bug was there. I handled a fair few medieval French coins today, from deniers to gros', i intitially wanted a denier but none of them were good enough. They were either pretty worn, nasty tones, overly cleaned to white, or were badly struck. Couldn't quite find one that i liked but i saw this and i thought, i'm taking that one home with me.

Does anyone know are French coins of this period broken down into classes like the English ones? If so more info on the one i've just got would be appreciated.

Just a wild guess, here, but if you got that one for 25 quid, I would say you have a real score there.

Great pair of coins Simon! I know very little about medieval French coins so I can't answer your question about classes. I do not know of a Spink-like book on French coins, but there must be something out there.

Well it was £28, but as i was pulling my money out i asked "that is £28 yeah?" and she said, "yeah but you can't have it for £25"... so 25 it was.

Looked nice enough to me though for the money.

As for the classes Æthelred, i'm thinking GD might know something on that level.
