1986 Topps BB Vending Boxes

New to posting on these boards, but a long time reader.

I know 1986 is not a great year for cards, but I won 5 vending boxes off eBay a couple of weeks ago for about $5.50 +shipping.

I have busted 4 of these already. I will have to say that top quality cards are very few and far between with these. I would think after opening 4 boxes, I should be able to put together atleast 1 complete set. However, I have sorted #'1 - 200 and am already missing about 20 cards.

Off the top of my head I have pulled:

(1) #1 Pete Rose
(2) #100 Nolan Ryan
(5) #200 Mike Schmidt
(4) #329 Kirby Puckett
(3) #661 Roger Clemens
(3) #500 Rickey Henderson
(2) #510 Wade Boggs
(1) #700 Reggie Jackson
(5) #130 Alan Trammell
(ZERO) #730 Ozzie Smith
(ZERO) #340 Cal Ripken
(ZERO) #180 Don Mattingly

Most of these would probably grade a 7, but some might get an 8.

Are the vending boxes really this scattered? The way it is looking, when I get done sorting the first 4 boxes, I'll still be missing aboiut 75 or so cards from a complete set. I gues I'm going to bust the final vending box tonight. Hopefully, it will yield some of the holes that I have.

If you are trying to put together a complete set, my advice would be just to buy a complete factory set. I picked up 3 about a year ago for $12 plus S/H

If any card graded less then an 8 I would be surprized.

  • Vending boxes are hit and miss. I bought two 1983 vending boxes recently and got no Boggs or Gwynn but had four Sandberg RC's and three Nolan Ryan's. Go figure!!!
