All time Packers Registry Set

There is a Paul Hornung rookie PSA6 on the bay right now. I am contemplating buying it and then cracking it to have Hornung sign it at the National. The sending it back to PSA to grade it again and then DNA it. After that I would add it to the all-time Packer Registry.

My question to you is --

Good idea or not?

Thanks in advance for your input

  • I would guess it's all a matter of personal choice.
If it were me however, I would only have original cards autographed if the value of the auto outweighed the value of the card. A PSA 6 Hornung RC would still be a pretty desireable card to alot of collectors, especially since it is a SP and much harder to find than, say, a Unitas RC from the same set. Since Hornung is still around and signing, I would think his sig is not all that expensive. Personally, I'd find a different card to have signed, something like one of those cards from one of the HOF type sets, like Swell. Or some other commemorative type card. It's always been my opinion that as soon as a star or HOF card get's signed the value of the card immediately drops to that of the auto., assuming the card is originally valued higher. But that's just me.

I have to agree. I wouldn't have him sign his rc card. The card itself is worth too much and the auto would bring down value. But if you don't intend on selling it again and would like it for personal reasons, then do it. Hornung was a great player. good luck to ya.

  • I have to agree. I actually have his RC in PSA5 and while this won't make me rich I wouldn't consider using it for a sig. I'd find another card prior to or at the show that would be in better condition for less $$$. As stated before, if his RC means something to you then do it. I can only say I wouldn't consider using a 63F Alworth for a sig card. I've also had Fouts sign an 84 for all aforementioned reasons.

Did Topps issue a Paul Hornung card? If so, it would provide an inexpensive alternative ...

I was thinking the same thing. Yes, Topps has an autographed Hornung RC in the 1998 Topps Stars rookie reprint auto set. It books for about $60, the auto's are usually nice and legible, the cards look nice, and it's already certified.

The cost of a 1957 Hornung PSA 6 + auto fee + PSA/DNA fee could be quite hefty!
