Whats the future

of unopened pack collecting? Im not a fan of GAI for card grading, but they have the market pack grading. I have some nice older unopened wax packs that will be graded shortly by them, but was wondering what the market future is in this area? Is a GAI 10 1985 T wax pack worth $100????

  • I personally don't buy older wax to keep the packs. I buy it to open it. I wouldn't pay $100 for a '85 Topps Wax pack regardless of the grade. I'll take the whole box from a reputable dealer and crack them all open. Pac grading should be for pre 70's packs. It's supposed to be for peace of mind that someone didn't buy a wrapper, a bunch of commons, a piece of bubble gum, and try to sell it as an unopened pack. There's still quite a bit of '80's material available so to pay that price for one pack when you can get a whole box (36 packs) for $105.00 (assuming you were referring to a football wax pack) is borderline absurd IMHO. Save the grading for packs from the '50's and '60's and early '70's. image

My bet is that older packs (pre- '80) will just keep going up in value. It's probably the safest card investment you could make, outside of high grade pre-war cards.

  • I started investing in pre 70 cellos 3 years ago. No wax, too easy to reseal. Sent in around 100 to GAI and 30% came back as reseals. Had fun busting those open. They were correct on about half. Most have almost doubled in value based on ebay sales. I agree that the older the better. I would not touch anything later than 70. Just too much still out there in closets and cases.

I don't really know about the whole pack or box grading collecting part of the hobby. The only product that I purposefully didn't open was the factory sets, but that's about it. Now I have come to realize that I should have been keeping a wrapper with each of my complete sets, something else I never did. Each person has to collect what they like, whether it's sealed boxes, packs, wrappers, autos, whatever. GAI pack grading isn't any worse than card grading probably.

  • I agree that graded pre 70 wax is a safe monetary bet. but i'll push the line to 1972 and earlier. the 71s are always expensive due to the black borders, and the 72s aren't cheap either. after 72 it gets thin except for 75, then its all a wash investment wise.

I repeat, NOTHING after 1979 will EVER be worth a damn save a few already expensive SP packs, etc... Everyone is holding and waiting, but the day will never come.

The premiums for GAI 10's will eventually go way down (just as they have in the modern card market).

The only post '75 boxes that I'd hold onto would be something like 79/80 OPC hockey, the rare 80's OPC boxes and some of the racks, 86 Fleer basketball, etc.

who has a pack price guide? Tuff stuff right? But does anyone put out a graded price guide on packs, boxes, etc?
