$4.00 for shipping and this is what I got

I am usually not one to complain about s/h. I actually took the seller's side on that debate the other day where the $6.00 was not excessive. But in this envelope came 2 common cards that I paid $.99 ea for and $4.00 shipping. 2 auctions/ combined shipping so I didn't think it was THAT out of line. Anyhow, here is the scan...

Is this rediculous for $4.00 shipping on a $1.98 win?

I would be fine with it if the card inside was sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard and the card being in a card saver or top loader as well.. It would have made it through that I'm sure.

    Poor seller.. Crappy shipping.

I would say so. Why do people ship any value of cards in a letter envelope? The envelope gets processed by a machine, increasing the odds of it getting damaged. A cheap bubble mailer, .60 postage, and he still could have made his "S&H profit" - but your cards would have arrived safely.

    Because they're booger eating a-holes.

yeah that's pretty messed up. Maybe in a toploader they might have a chance, but not much of one.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

Now as I stated the last time, this is a seller that would deserve negative feedback for shipping charges, using a normal envelope and putting a 37 cent stamp on it.

Doesn't surprise me...ebay sellers have become pretty sleazy these days.

OK, I been relatively quiet in the past on the shipping thing.
Usually I just mention what I charge and how items are shipped.
    This example burns me up.

In the past month I jumped into the modern selling market to see what would happen.
I have the time and made buys that would ensure no losses.
In that time I have shipped close to 100 packages, and found ways to make shipping less costly and more efficient.

Some things I hear and know are not true -

    Shipping materials costs -
#0 bubble packs can be bought at Sam's Club for $4.50 in boxes of 25, 18 cents each.
Top loaders - 10 cents max
Penny sleeves - negligible, less than a penny.

    Postage-
Postage can be purchased and printed on Ebay/Paypal. A 2 oz. package (one or two cards) will cost 93 cents, which includes delivery confirmation. They charge a little more than the usual 60 cents for this package, but would you rather stand in line? Insurance up to $200 can now be printed this way too. Print the label on regular paper and tape securely to the package.
If you want to print postage on labels buy 8 1/2 x 11 label stock, $25 for 100 sheets and print two labels per sheet.

Priority mail can also be printed this way, with the flat rate envelopes/boxes available free at the post office, or you can order quantities of 25 for free which are delivered to your house.

So, you now have a package that has cost about $1.50 to produce, and needs to be delivered to the postal service. Drop in any mail box, pack n ship, or post office.

Four bucks is not steep, but for 25 cents more I ship Priority Mail, which I require for orders over $50. I figure if someone spends that much then they deserve better handling.

Lets face it, some people just shaft us on shipping. Others may not know the real cost or how to package items safely.
I find that buyers really appreciate secure packaging and low cost shipping. That's why I charge $2.50 for up to three cards, and 50 cents each after that.

    My two cents.
  • I typically charge $1.25 to ship a single card.

    My cost:
    Postage $.49
Delivery Confirmation and Paypal fee for first class label $.33
    #000 Bubble Mailer $.14
Top Loader and Penny Sleeve $.05

My actual cost to ship a single card is $1.01

I figure my time is worth the other $.24

Bottom line is a lot people make a lot of money by charging excessive shipping fees. I simply figure their shipping price in to what I'm willing to pay for an item and bid accordingly. If I paid four dollars and received a standard envelope with a $.39 stamp it would be an automatic neg followed by a nastygram to the seller. Totally uncalled for in my opinion!

    My note to the seller...

I won a few auctions for you last week and this is how I got them today. One card was unharmed, but the other had a dinged corner and the card in the penny sleeve was hanging out. For $4.00 shipping I think maybe you could invest in a bubble mailer? I understand that there are handling charges, but come on. Your cards are awesome and that is why I bought again but please get them to me in one piece. If you won't do a bubble mailer at least tap two pieces of cardboard around the cards.

    His response...

I am going to continue to ship the same way there should have been tape on the top of the holder. If you do not like the way the cards will be shipped please purchase your cards elsewhere. Let me know which card was damaged and I will replace it.

I appreciate him taking care of the card that was damaged but I think I am going to buy my cards elsewhere.

I try to make sure that I don't lose money on S/H charges. It's nice if I make money on them, but sometimes with a 200 or 300 ct card lot I can loose money if I only charge $4.50 or $5.00. I agree that someone should take into consideration what the S/H is going to be. I prefer sellers that actually state the cost of S/H versus someone who says " winning bidder to pay exact shipping" or " shipping to be determined after the close of the auction" or some other BS. I just try to guess a figure that won't lose me money, and seems low enough that people will bid. As for single cards, I charge $2.00-$2.50, and everyone can hate me for it. But I ship EVERYTHING in 300ct boxes, because I buy those in bulk. At least with a box, you don't have to worry about the card getting damaged during shipping. I can make up to a whole dollar on s/h sometimes, but that's why its shipping and handling. It takes time to pack cards up so they won't get destroyed.

    That's absolutely ridiculous...charging $4 for that?

The bad thing is...most sellers now only give feedback once the buyer has...instead of the other way around. You hit him with a negative, you can be sure that you are going to get a retaliatory negative in return.

I don't have a problem paying for shipping. I sell as much as I buy and I have too lost money on shipping. But take care of thecards that you are sending out. It would never cross my mind to stick a card ina toploader, throw it in a white envelope and sen it on its way. I would think that anyone in this hobby places value in cards. I would think that would make someone want to ship with care. I don't think that $4.00 is unreasonable, I think the shipping method was.

The seller sent you the answer, buy your cards elsewhere. I've received a few cards from sellers in a plain envelope. On one occasion the card was ruined.
I've also gotten broken slabs from a bubble mailer. How they handle the situation keeps me buyin or makes me look at other sellers.
I charge $3 for a shipping and that can be up to 3 slabs in the bubble mailer. What more handling charge do I need to charge when I'm throwing multiple cards into the same mailer?? Even with delivery confirmation and 1st class shipping, I've never lost money on basic shipping of a few slabs.
So for all those sellers out there who charge 3 or 4 bucks for a white envelope delivery, you're going to lose some business.

    Zef,

    Who was the seller?

    Mike

Late 60's and early to mid 70's non-sports
  • you gotta love these low priced item sellers telling customers to piss off. truth is, even with this shipping cost after fees he is looking at how much profit? nada. I seriously don't know why people even bother with anything under $2.

    there is no pride anymore...
