1981 Topps

Bought a wax box today from a dealer at a show for $30. Wasn't sure about how good of a deal i got but just wanted to have some fun ripping packs. Was suprised to check BBC's website and see his for sale at $75.
I pulled a nice Ryan, Brett, Ozzie, Yount, and Yaz along with a few other stars and semi-stars that i might consider grading. One Raines RC with a little bit of snow on it and ZERO Henderson's. Overall i was pretty happy that the gum was solid white and didn't stick to any of the cards but had the typical wax stains on all the top cards.
Just looking for some input from the 81 collectors. A slow Sunday!

I don't think it's just his site, but most places have (to me at least) surprising costs involving older unopened packs/boxes.

Just not sure what keeps the prices on these types of sets so high...81 while a fun set, doesn't hold any high dollar cards. Same with the 84 donruss stuff.

Well, to defend my '84 Donruss set.....it does have both the rookie cards of Don Mattingly (very popular and high dollar) and Joe Carter which both easily surpass anything more than what the '81s have. But, it's also the shorter print of the '84 Donruss (and better quality at the time) of the cards that keeps it up. But, mostly it's that Mattingly rookie which goes for around $600-$800 every time out in PSA 10 on eBay.

Axtell you must have meant to say 81 Donruss set?

  • I bought a cello box of '81 topps a few months ago. Had the Ryan and Raines graded. Ryan came back a 9 and Raines an 8. Sold the Henderson, Baines rookie and few of the HOF'ers raw since I figured they were 8's at best. I really like the look of the set but not much collecting appeal.

  • '81 is one of my fav. sets.

$30 is a good price for unopened wax. Most have been going on 'ebay for around $40-$50, plus shipping. If I were at a show, and saw $30, I'd buy it on the spot.

It's a fun set for those of us who grew-up in the 80's....also nice and inexpensive to upgrade or put together.
  • All this talk of opening 1981 Topps boxes got me wondering if anyone pulled a nice version of Joe Charboneau #13. I need this card for my Rookie of the Year set and this card never appears on EBAY.

    Any help would be appreciated...

No I meant why is a box of 84 donruss $150?

Mattingly, while popular, isn't going to the hall of fame, and realistically I just can't fathom why boxes of this stuff is so expensive?

Most unopened stuff, particularly 80s stuff, seems vastly overpriced to me. There's talk of a Mattingly 10 going for $600, but how many 10s are you going to pull out of a box?

81's are the bomb most passed over set of the modern era and one of the toughest for the last 50% in 3d effect.

Drew thought you were sellin out? Charby's a toughie.

Now if I could only find time to sort out my 150k stash life would be good finally have them in 100's lol.

Maybe 1 or 2 out of a case?
  • LD_Ferg - I would prefer a graded one but I'm certainly not picky at this stage...A nice raw version that I can send in myself also works.

Gators - I sent you an email

  • Andrew.
I got one if you want. Small touch on the top LH corner. Hair OC top to bottom. Probably an 8.

  • Here is the only Charboneau I pulled from the cello box that I opened. I have a vending box on the way and will be on the lookout for another one.

Probably an 8 at best. OC and minor edge wear.

  • shambo2000 and ldferg,

thanks for looking for the Charboneau for me...I tracked one down over the weekend that I'm going to submit this week...it is most likely a PSA 8 as well, but it will have to do for the time being...
