THE BEST NEW IDEA FOR PCGS REGISTRY SET COLLECTING EVER ??

orevilleoreville Posts: 12,024 ✭✭✭✭✭
PCGS needs to put teeth into their philosophy that while registry set collecting is primarily about rating of best sets, etc., most INTERESTING sets should also be promoted. This would get all those who have a philosophical problem with registry collecting "on board." How can PCGS do this?

I would like to see PCGS start a new registry category of "free form sets" which are NOT rated by points at all. I predict this concept would take off like wildfire.

This should be incredibly easy for PCGS to set up. Possibly a limit of no more than 200 coins per set? As long as the coin is slabbed by PCGS then lets give it a whirl. It does not have to be US only coins. It could even be a blending of lightside and darkside coins, US and colonial coins.

New set categories could be discovered as we all experiment with all kind of new sets or set up the sets that we already have done on our own. Obviously, the listing should be alphabetized by poster's name. The only requirement is to label your set as to what the set is all about. Also the owner of the set must explain WHY this set is so interesting to him or her. The set will NOT register unless the owner of the set puts in a minimum of 25 words or more as to WHY this set means something to him or her!

I could easily do a short pattern set, a set of my favorite 10c mint state type coins, a set of all my favorite 1872 coins, etc. The possibilities are endless.

I firmly believe this may be the most exciting idea ever for registry set collecting. Moderns and classic, darkside and lightside, and Colonial and Federal coins could actually be friends and not strangers in this single category!

Manofcoins: That is the point. It would be a single listing that would be alphabetized by poster's name. It would merely be a free form registry set category that would encompass a nearly unlimited amount of categories.

    No finest set.

This way if you wanted to do several sets that pleases you such as an old fashioned 1932 to 1940 quarter set, you could do one. or just a key date set or whatever. All sets would be under your name manofcoins. So what if there are an endless # of categories? We would then begin to see what kind of sets you as a real collector like in addition to the "standard" categories that PCGS allows. We would also get an idea of what interests you as a collector as why.

It adds a complementary non-competitive aspect to registry collecting which would then allow all collectors to experiment with their different collections and make some sense out of them if they have not already done so.

Would you believe someone could actually create a sample slab registry set? Or a 1701 to 1799 set? An 1801 to 1899 type set? Sure we will get an unlimited number of sets but it would be all in one single listing and would not interfere with the rest of registry collecting.

This would also cut down PCGS's workload. Pattern collectors, for example, could have free formed their own pattern sets and PCGS could have learned by observing what pattern sets seemed to work well. That takes pressure off PCGS in having to create an endless array of registry categories and subcategories before finding out if there was a need for such category/subcategory?

Isn't collecting all about experimenting on what kind of set(s) to put together to please the collector? It also gives other collectors a glimpse of the different interests the owner of the sets has in coins.

I'd like to see registry sets that were grading sets of a particular coin in every grade. e.g. there could be one for the 1917 DDO Lincoln in every grade thus far assigned by PCGS from P1 up to & including MS70 (or MS67 in this case). This would prod people to collect duplicates of a particular coin in multiple grades in stead of constantly upgrading. This in turn would put more uoward pricing pressure on coins as people would hold more & sell less - all else equal.

I know it sounds crazy but several people already do this imageimageimageimage

It's kind of a registry set blog, if I think I understand you correctly. There were myriad of naysayers about blogs when they first emerged, but look at them now...an important part of world journalism.

Interesting idea, Oreville. If might refine it a bit, and thus perhaps make more plausible/doable...PCGS is not going to let non-PCGS coins in to their sets, so scratch that concept. Second, have the best 50 coin set, 100 coin set, 250 coin set, 500 coin set and -- yes -- 1,000 coin set. Call them as sets/as such. People can pop in their best/most cherished coins. The sets should be weighted, taking advantage of the existing technology/methodology, etc. And since these would be official sets, competition (this is good or bad, depending on how you look at it) will be inevitable.

This would be kind of like a type set, but without defined types...you can put in whatever you want, as long as it is PCGS and has a cert#.

This may water down your original premise, but I think it would be more palatable to PCGS and certainly more doable within a minimal time frame.

Might be interesting making a Half Dollar, or maybe Quarter, or even Dollar set. Ah shucks that would mean I'd only have three sets not the dozen or so I'm up to now.

This concept as been mentioned before, and it never took off. There are many different versions of this concept, like an open registry with a single category that would except all coins. This could also help with inventory of coins that you may have purchased with no set in mind. I think it would at some point get bogged down with a bunch of mindless sets.

BAJJERFAN: <<<<Looks like what yer talkin about is a basic spreadsheet to keep track of yer holdings.>>>> It can be if someone wants to just use it that way. But it does not have to be that. It can be whatever collectors want it to be.

Mistercoinman:<<<<<This concept as been mentioned before, and it never took off. >>>>> I do not believe PCGS has ever tried this concept, so that is why it never took off.

Manofcoins: <<<<No competition ? No way would pcgs or ngc agree to that. >>>> This would be only one category. Would hardly affect the mainstream registry concept but give naysayers an opportunity to participate. Would increase interest in the sets.

Another concept of this free form registry set as rbintex indicated, would be a grading set of a single coin date/mm. Cool.

PCGS could certainly give this idea a trial period. If could do no harm. There are so many categories wihout a single entry for more than a year ever.

Good idea, but hard too program. If you have a nice group of toned coins, you can always picture them as a group on the TCCS website, but nowhere else. Actually if they'd do a top 20 for silver, gold, world etc. it probably would catch on. Meanwhile the NGC site serves as a good list, but not spreadsheet, for my Morgans.

    >>>As long as the coin is slabbed by PCGS

i remember when the national football league was the best of the best and they always slaughtered the american football league

then one day joe namath and the jets beat the snot out of the colts in the superbowl

it was then i learned that if you wanted to build an all-star team and have that team represent the best of the best ...you had to include players from the american league....because if you excluded them...you really didnt have the best team possible

my point is....if you think having just pcgs coins in any set it cant possibly be the best

all the best sets have to have other services or its not the best at all and those that think so are just kidding themselves

    ie

its like wanting to put together an all star baseball team to play in the olympics....and only getting to pick national league players....

    conclusion

any closed registry is just kidding the participants into thinking they are the best.....as the world laughs at their ignorance.........err arogance

    monsterman

my goal is to find the monsters and i go where they are but i sometimes miss some.... so if you have any and want to sell IM THE BUYER FOR THEM!!!

out of rockets ...out of bullets...switching to harsh language

I don't think that anyone is naive enough to believe that if he has the number one registry set for a given category that he automatically has the BEST set of those coins in that category. There are nice coins in other holders AND there are probly raw coins stashed away in forgotten collections that would blow some of the current ones out of the water. These things need to be put in the proper perspective.

If you wish to go for an obfusticated registry set ... how about just trying to do one modern set using only mint errors such as broadstrikes, off center, brockage, etc.

That would be a cool set to see indeed! I would like to see that set. That would fit without any problems in the free form registry set.

I understand your point. But my suggestion is NOT about being the best. It is instead about being the most interesting within the confines of a PCGS approved set. Certainly NGC can and should do the same. Anyone can. The way I look at this would be that this registry category could be seen as the farm club of major league registry sets. The sets themseleves and categories are potential major league material in the future.

I also see this next step in registry collecting; as a way to satisfy those who are turned off by the obsessiveness of the competition in registry set collecting and to give them an outlet to "collect" their slabs without "competing."

Outside of newer coins where you are challenged to find the best yourself, the Registry concept is IMHO distructive in the long run. After all, only the wealthy and most connected will ever be #1, and everyone else is a wannabe by their definition, including NGC coin owners.

I guess my "funny money set" might fit into the new "open category."

how to make it competitive? well it could be a combination of # of coins and grades. so that the more coins and the higher grades means a higher rank.

while I think your new "open category" would be nice for those of us not putting together an official "registry set," I kind of doubt that pcgs or ngc would host it because there are too many variables.

for example, just with the case of my "funny money collection" are silver dollars or steel cents included? my feeling is "no" on the the silver dollars because silver dollars are well known and steel cents ar a "maybe," even though not in my original game plan.

Also, Im not including "large cents" in my funny money collection now but large cents could be added.

But--- by using # of coins and grade of all coins in the set -- some measure for competition could be set. and the bottom line would be the more high grade coins in your "open set" the better the collection would be ranked.

    just my thoughts....

An error set can be done without changing the present format of the registry sets ... just for grins I put up my three error Lincoln cents and the registry set was accepted.

weresteve: If those three cents are less than 10% of the entire number of coins to complete set then PCGS will eventually delete your set as per past policy if you do not keep adding more coins at least once a year. That has already happened to me.

This is why I made my proposal. The present format of the registry sets do not change. Just adding an open ended registry category does not sound like "changing the present format of the registry sets."

It merely gives an additional outlet to those who would like to do an additional set without cluttering up the competition registry sets category.

I already plan on adding in more as time permits which will probably be about twice a year or so ... just depends upon how many submissions I do. One of the area coin dealers carries a large number of error coins and usually has a book or two of raw coins which I usually seach through. Once I hit the five coin minimum for a submission I fire it off to PCGS.
