Top 10 football cards

Baseball is my thing, so help me out. If you were collecting the 10 most important football cards, would the list look like this? (chronological)

33 Sport Kings #4 Red Grange
35 National Chicle #34 Bronko Nagurski
48 Leaf #34 Sammy Baugh
52 Bowman Large #16 Frank Gifford
55 Topps All-American #37 Jim Thorpe
55 Topps All-American #68 Four Horsemen
57 Topps #136 Johnny Unitas
65 Topps #122 Joe Namath
76 Topps #148 Walter Payton
81 Topps #216 Joe Montana

I tried to span the history book here, but still had to lop off the Marino and Elway rookies. I suppose the list could been entirely vintage and ended with Namath -- leaving room for two from among 51 Van Brocklin or 52 Lansford or 57 Bart Starr or 58 Jim Brown or a half-dozen others.

Football collectors, what does your Top 10 list look like?

You should make room for the 1989 Pro Set Turnstile Tony Mandarich.

i would drop the thorpe...and add either the '51 landry or van brocklin...most likely the landry, as most people have no idea who van brocklin was.

I would probably also dump the payton...it is such an ugly card. i'd probably add either the '86 jerry rice, '89 score barry sanders, or the '90 score supplemental emmitt smith.

First off, dont drop the thorpe.

Personally, I would drop the gifford and add Jim Brown... too bad we couldn't fit the Starr RC on there.

If I was going to add modern, I'd think it would Marino and Elway over those three. But that's what the debate is about. Keep 'em coming!

No problem subbing Brown for Gifford, though Giff is a much prettier card IMO. Too bad about Bart, he could go in for Payton. I forgot about Tom Landry. This is a tough squeeze for 10.

I wish I had the 48L Baugh but I have shown this one which is the cousin to it:

I also have a cool program from the 40s with Baugh's name in the roster.

How about 62 Tark, or 71 Bradshaw?

Certainly they make the All-QB list, or the Top 25 overall, but I didn't see who they would bump from the Top 10. Tark from that lovely black '62 set is a tough one to cut, I admit, but when even 51 Van Brocklin or 57 Starr don't make it ....

After reading about dropping the Payton because it is ugly, I thought aesthetics was an important factor. The 62 Tark is IMO sweet. And I like the look of the 71 set also. I think we need to define the whether we are talking about looks, importance of the play, or importance of the car to the hobby.

Personally I think dropping the Payton would be a bad move. I agree with dropping the Gifford and adding the Jimmy Brown(which also happens to be a great looking card)

Pretty good list, here's my revised one, for what it's worth.................

Omit the sport king card of Red Grange, not a true FB set.
    Frank Gifford ? not really.
Leave off the two most recent, Payton and Montana.

    By date;
    1935 Nat C., Rockne
    1935 Nat C., Nagurski
    1948 Leaf, Baugh
    1950 Bow., Walker
1952 Bow. L, Lansford ( only "common" but a true rare, high priced, last number card )
    1955 Topps, Four Horsemen
    1957 Topps, Unitas
    1957 Topps, Starr
    1958 Topps, Brown
    1965 Topps, Namath
