To show or not to show ...

Does anyone else get aggrivated when they view a particular registry set and a number of the individual sets are not viewable? I know there are pros and cons to showing one's set, like competition. But isn't that part of what the Registry is about. What are your thoughts on the subject? Should the grades for the individual cards on the Registry be shown?

Some people are very private. They may use the registry as a personal database for their collection and are not interested in showing it to the public. Some like having the #1 set in the world but don't like putting it on display. Sometimes they allow access only to a small circle of friends, fellow collectors and insurance agents.

Me, if I had some of the elite cards those guys have, I'd proclaim it with a tattoo.

Sure everyone can do whatever they want - but why bother with the Registry if you keep ALL your sets hidden.
There are numerous ways to catalog a collection. The "Howard Hughes" approach is indeed aggravating.

I can understand some of the top slot holders not showing their sets. If the #2 & #3 guys know which cards the #1 Guy needs to improve his set they will make it that much tougher on him. His strategy will probably pay off when trying to upgrade a top seeded set.

Personally I'd like to see all registry sets viewable to all.

  • I really enjoy going through the Set Registry and viewing cards, and I always hate when not one person for a particular set has any scans to view (especially pre war sets), so I decided to scan all my cards in my registered pre war sets for others to view if they wish. It takes extra time and effort but it allows me to enjoy my collection anywhere I have internet access and hopefully others can enjoy the effort also.

Jayhawk, so do I. In fact I just looked at your Goudey set. Love your #181. That's the one I want for my 500 HR Club set.

I cant wait until I get my cards through the mail to get them scanned and posted in the registry. I dont buy this whole thing about privacy, maybe for a select few. The top guys in each set usually have multiple sets registered in the top 5 I really doubt they have the same dedication to each individual set as someone like me who will be collecting my set for 10% of my natural life.

Peter, I agree, show the cards or don't use. At least that is my stance.

    I'm all for showing 'em.

Not sure why you'd want the ranking without being able to show off.

  • I am one of those that doesn't make my sets viewable. I currently have the top 1952-55 Red Man baseball sets, and am working on 1966 Philadelphia football and 1963 Parkhurst hockey sets.

I do not show my sets because sellers, mostly dealers, would use that info against me. My "competition" is not really a concern, as anyone familiar with the sets I am collecting, pretty much has figured out what I need. Besides most of my "competitors" have been very friendly, and we all work together in improving our sets.

I do not really see why people would be interested in seeing a list of the sets anyway. If my 1955 Red Man set has a grade of 8.37, you pretty much know that the set is made up of mostly PSA 8 and 9 cards.

Unfortunately, if I dont make the set viewable, I cannot use other features of the registry to share my sets with others. I cannot show scans of selected cards, links to my other sets, or make comments about my set that might be of interest.

In my case, I have a website for my Red Man cards. It would be nice if I could provide a link to the site on the registry.

The Psa Registry keeps improving every year. Hopefully, at some point it will become more than just a list of sets where listings of grades is considered making ones set viewable.

  • Thanks to everyone for their comments.

RGOLD : Interesting point. I've heard others say that they were not as concerned about the other collectors as they are the dealers knowing what they have and using that against them. I've never heard anyone say they would be interested in using the comment field or showing some of their cards. Maybe PSA would be willing to make the other features available to those collectors who chose not to show the individual grades.

  • Whether someone opens or closes their set is a personal decision, and I don't understand what the big deal is. Frankly, it's like your nosey neighbor complaining that your blinds are always closed. Then when they finally come over for a party, they have to look in every room.

I close only one set (1959) and it's because of nosey neighbors who don't want to see me complete the set, or dealers who email me with outrageous pricing or bug me to sell to them. The other members on that year set registry know what I am looking for and we are mutually helpful. When the set is finished it will be opened.
