Out of control 1978 Topps PSA 8 auction

This is the craziest auction I have seen yet involving the 1978 set I am collecting. I have seen more than a few
out of control auctions for low pop PSA 9's and the rare low pop PSA 8. But this card has a pop of NINE PSA 9's, and TWELVE PSA 8's.
Hardly low enough to stir up craziness!!! Obviously the newbie factor plays a big part here. He wanted this card so bad that he kept bidding
until he topped musky captain (veteran 78 set collector).

1978 madness!

What? I can't give PSA 8's away for .99, and this one sells for over $50? image

topped musky captain (veteran 78 set collector).

does that mean that the veteran 78 set collector thought it was worth 50.00?
    Good for you.

I know, I thought of this too. I don't know how close he is to completing the set. That might be a factor?
    Crazy either way!

Apparently - that was his high bid. I just don't get it...

He must be close to finishing the set. Set a bid of 50 bucks to absolutley insure him the card. Which it would 99.9% of the time for a PSA 8 common which is not really low in population. Along came the spider bidding up the common.......

Let's not forget there are guys who collect Glenn Burke cards because I believe he was one of the first major leagers to come out of the closet. So maybe there are two guys collecting graded Glenn Burke cards!? Ok, it's a stretch but just trying to come up with something!

Congrats to the buyer. It takes a great effort to beat the captain, had it been a "9" I don't think the captain would have lost. Though I'm still shocked that he did lose.

    Thanks for noticing the banner!
