Grading by PCI
I know that PCI doesn't get a very good rap among collectors, but I am interested in your opinions. I think that PCI does a pretty good job. They have been around for fifteen years now and I would think that they would have gone bye-bye by now if they were so consistanly wrong in their grading. I have sent some coins to them and I believe that they are very accurate.
I wouldn't send them a coin of great value for grading simply because I don't think anyone would pay a high price for the coin on resale because they might not trust their grading. I would use PCGS or NGC for that, but for average coins under $1000 I think that they are fine.
What are your thoughts?

<< <i>Since they changed hands I don't trust their grading, but the old green holder coins are correctly graded:
As long as they are the 10 or 14 digit serial number holders, the nine digit green holders have questionable grading.......

I cannot find it right now though.

<< <i>there was a thread around here from a couple of years ago about PCI holdering a Fake 1856 Flying Eagle.

Thread got toasted last time they did database cleanup.

In recent months PCI has holdered as authentic two altered Gallery Mint 1793 Liberty cap large cents as genuine.

My single thought is that you have lost your mind.
<< <i>What does that mean, buy at rip prices and cross them over? >>
It means buying them at forced labor prices then cracking them out and sending to a good grading service
<< <i>Depends on the coin/series I guess. >>
PCI gold label sucks across every series. But, even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

They would be bye-bye if it wasn't for eBay and a number of large eBay sellers who get their junk graded by them.
As been mentioned previously, PCI was sold a couple of years ago and since then their grading of coins is atrocious. I wouldn't buy any gold label PCI coin sight unseen.
I'm worried they will miss the authenticity or some other problem.
This is one PCI I trust.

BTW, can anyone tell me how to safely crack open one of these holders?

I've found a few gems in old holders for reasonable money. You can also sometimes find nice quality cameo franklins in old green holders for cheap......
