2001-2004 Heritage Sets - How to Collect?

Well, I jumped on the heritage bandwagon this year, and am definitely hooked. What's the best way to collect these older sets?

A nice 2001 master set on ebay will set you back around 300$ e.g.

I also like the idea of going to a local show and find a guy with a nice set who needs money and will drop it for more like 200$ would be my guess - worth the try anyway. Plus, you get to inspect the set.

edit: I'm going to upgrade my sets from 2001-2003; I'm looking at base sets which won't cost ya a lot of money.

Definately buy the master sets. Chromes you will have to buy seperately...sometimes as sets or piece them together. I think as far as the 2001 and 2002 Chromes, piecing together is the way to go. Rarely will you see these two chromes sold as sets.
Axtell, Im in the same boat as you! Got hooked this year now I have to go backwards....the 2001 and 2002 chromes, 2003 chrome refractors, and autos are TOUGH!

Cards grade average NM-MT. Also included in the lot is one 2001 Topps Heritage Willie Mays card signed in "red" ink.

Lokks blue to me, maybe I am color blind?

That is my dream set, I own all the retired sigs but I would love the current guys which include Bonds, Helton, Glavine, Chipper...

The Mays red was a replacment for Mathews and a Doby cards, notice they don't mention that it is numbered...I bet they are probably
valuing it at the red ink price which is wrong...I wonder if they are also using the Doby price....of course it is worthless as an
    expired redemption.

This kind of set was listed on ebay a while ago and it didn't do well as most just don't understand this set....of course it hurts that they
don't have more pics up. If anyone wants to see more go to the heritage museum post here.

As far as the original post, yes sets are the way to go. Im very surprised to hear that you can pick up a 2001 master set for 300. Is that for
both red and black low numbers? I think they can a master either color, but most called a master set both red and black variations. 300
bucks isn't a bad deal considering a box will cost you over 200.
