Topps bulk case

I'm seriously thinking about buying an 86 Topps FB cut case and am curious as to other board memebers' experiences opending bulk cases. I'm intered in the condition that I should expect (Simiar to a vending box or are there a lot of miscuts/rejects?)

Regards,

They are hit or miss ... Roger from 4SC has stopped buying them unless they're really discounted. He did well with '85 FB once and took a huge loss on an '82 FB case.

They aren't really miscuts or rejects - just the end of the factory run ... packaged in bulk. The cards are placed in the box (case) without any packaging or protection.

I've opened a few and they have produced many 9's and a few 10's. The quality of the cards isn't as good as regular vending but they can produce some nice cards. The only way to buy them is at a good discount. If you pay regular vending case prices for them, you'd be better off buying a regular vending case. I would predict though that 86 FB is going to be tough in bulk case form. Those cards are all resting against each other and the green chips easily. A lot depends on how the case has been handled over the years.

The case appears to be in good condition and I talked the dealer down to $2600 - which isn't bad because a bulk case equals approximately 17 vending boxes which typicall sell for $220 each (total of $3740 for 17 vending boxes).

I'm seriously considering buying the case. I figure that one PSA 10 Rice or Young and I'll be close to recouping my $. I'm guessing that I'd get around 25 of each card (the case includes the entire set). It's a gamble.

I would guesstimate that you would probably get about 5 PSA 9's of each of the Rice and Young's and the rest 8's with no 10's. When I say "a few 10's" from my cases, I would specify that as 2 common PSA 10's out of 24,000 cards (3 cases). PSA 10's don't even factor into my buying decision on these. You'll see what I'm talking about when you open one. Nice, but not great.

Are these bulk cases sealed? Can they be resealed without being detected? How do you know it hasn't been cherry-picked? Just curious.

The cards line up just like the cards in vending boxes except they come in 9 rows (3 by 3) of about 900 cards each. The cards in the rows have that same look as vending boxes. Anybody could search them but they wouldn't go back quite as nice as they came out, same as vending boxes. Every case that I've bought has already been opened because they come in plain brown cardboard boxes and the seller has to verify what's in there. I bought mine from very big dealers though.
  • They are regular issue cards Cut from the individual 132 card sheets. They are loosely packed at approximately 8500 cards per case so you should get approx. 65 of each card in the case (65 x 132). The condition usually isn't the greatest because they are packed on their sides rather than 500/box (regular vending). A lot more corner and edge wear than regular vending combined with the regular problems (ie. centering, print dots, etc.) with the issue depending on the year. Since they are cut from a particular sheet, it's not likely that you ewill get a complete set from a cut case. Also, unless you know what sheet the cards were cut from, there is no guarantee there will be a Rice or Young. image

Good point Scott. I was assuming that he knew he was getting a case with Rice's and Young's in them. That's one thing to definately make sure you know before buying.

Supposedly the case contains all the sheets in the 1986 set. Does that seem strange to anyone - since the only bulk cases I've seen have been of specific sheets from a particular set?

    Regards,

    Greg M.

FYI - The seller is Steve Hart - so I trust that he is telling the truth that the case contains the entire set...

  • That does seem strange to me. I've never seen a cut case that encompasses the entire set. image

The most I've ever seen was 4 sheets in one case, I've never seen an entire set in a case. If the seller is Steve Hart, I would believe what he says.
