1959 Topps Vintage Baseball set building

I am mainly a vintage football guy, but was thinking of venturing into baseball.

For the 1959 Topps baseball set what % of book do PSA 5 usually go for? I am trying to get a feel of the economic feasibility of building that set. Any help appreciated gang.

I built around 20 % of this set in PSA 7 & 8 (mostly 7) about a year or so ago and i found it to be quite affordable even in these grades.

I bottom feeded on the 8's and would sometimes get them under 15 bucks ( including s&h ) each for the high pop ones. When i sold my set i made a nice profit on most of them.

you can get a nice start if you can find a nice lot of midgrade cards...maybe 20 or so cards you can get them for around 6 or 7 dollars per card.

I would recomend PSA 6 and above since you might just not find much lower graded ones on ebay and quite frankly the price difference its not much at all.

You can find PSA 5 and 6 HOF'ers for around 10 dollars each!....thats not bad

Its a nice set..kinda of big for my taste but its very colorful and it has a nice mix of 50's stars and 60's stars as well.

I kept all the Cuban players from the set...and the Tony Taylor always sticks on my mind for being so damn pink!..lol

    I agree with 8th St.

This is the set I'm building and his prices are right on.

My set is mostly 7s at the moment.

I actually have gotten high grade raw commons off the bay on a few different occasions. I have gotten many 8's off the cards I have bought raw. Just a thought especially if you are shooting for the 6-8 range, it may be more cost efficient to buy a lots and get the grading done yourself. JMO. Good luck with it what ever you chose to do. I love the 59 set. I love the 59 football set too.

Makes you wonder how many lucky SOB's have unopened boxes of this kind of vintage ... or what kind of find may happen one day. I am a dreamer

I have never seen much unopened 59 material. A whole box would be great, but out of my budget.

I too have had some success with buying raw. You have to be careful and try to buy from good sellers. None of mine have been graded yet. Waiting to get a bigger pile to submit.

One of my attractions to this set is the colors and simple design. It reminds me of the art deco period that was the rage in the late fifties-early sixties. And it is the year I was born.
