Biggest bidding gaffs?

My biggest mistake was a bid I was making through a sniping tool for one of just 8 cards I needed to complete the 1955 Topps set. A day before, ebay required me to change my password for security reasons. It never occurred to me that I had to notify the snipe service as well. Needless to say, my bid was about 80% higher than what the card went for yet I had no shot because it never went in. Ugh!!!

One night I sniped 5 of the same card and won 4 of them. The first one I got for aboout 65% of my snipe, then each one sold for more than the one before. The last one I won was for almost my full snipe. I thought I had set it up to cancel the other snipes as soon as I won one, but no.

Nothing exciting here. I found a card on ebay I had been looking for, for quite some time. I plannned on coming back and winning it but instead I made the mistake of laying on the couch to watch MNF. I fell asleep, missed the auction but I at least got to drool on my arm.

My biggest mistake was every bid I made in 2003 when I first got back in collecting. Bought way too much raw junk vintage.
  • Back in the summer of 02, I fell asleep and didn't get my 5300 bid on a 52 Topps Mantle PSA 8OC - it went for 4800 - exact same story a few months later with a 3600 bid on a PSA 3 which went for 3100...

More of a regret than a bidding mistake, but back in the fall 02, I knew a guy here in Atlanta who would sell me a 52 Mantle PSA 8 for 22500, I chickened out as that was all the money I had though...

I still don't own a damn mantle and now I can't afford one since they've appreciated so much...

Nah, it wasn't Bench. It was an '87D Bonds PSA 9 when I was trying to get all his rookie cards. Luckily sold off almost all my Bonds since then. But it reminds me when I was a dealer in the late 1980s, busting '87 Donruss and Fleer boxes. I'd toss Bonds and Maddux into the commons pile as I searched for Mike Greenwell, Will Clark, Bo Jackson and Jose Canseco. Those were the days!

After this mistake, I was sleeping in the garage for a month!

In 1993 or 4, Greg Manning held an auction at the National and I bid on about 10 lots - bid the minimum and never called back. I figured, with some stroke of lightning I would get 1.

Call on the phone: me: "hello" other end: "hi this is Steve Novella - ya won a few lots" me: hmmm...I'm thinking two lots! Wow! "OK Steve" other end: "you won ten lots and with the postage, please send us 5775 bucks" me: holy sh!t!....holy sh!t!....holy sh!t!...my wife is going to.... "no problem Steve [I'll just sell the family jewels, cat, first born and new blender] I'll get a check out to ya tomorrow...thanx for calling"

That will never happen on ebay or auctions today. And at the time, I wished it hadn't happened to me.
Sometime on a slow nite, I'll post the 10 lots.

What exactly is a sniper and how does one go about getting it? When I keep getting outbid and outbid in the last minute of an quction am I being "sniped"?

Will, you probably are getting sniped. I refuse to use a sniping service myself, but I only bid with 10 seconds left in an auction. I guess I snipe manually. The only down fall to this is as lawnmowerman said you occaisionally fall asleep on the couch and drool on your arm a little, sometimes missing an auction. Maybe another member can post a link to a good sniping service for you.

Best of luck & welcome to the boards, Bob

I recently bid on a huge block of 35+ separate auctions for 1978 Topps PSA 9's. I ended up winning 32 of the cards (for $2 each or so) and only then did I realize that over half of the cards were duplicates and some were triplicates. I ended up w/ 5 Paul Naumhoff's!!!! There were only 15 or so different cards....arghhh..

So Stone, did you have to sell your family jewels? That's gotta hurt! image
