Lee, great job on those 78's tonight. Man did you clean up I was too scared to enter that fray. Lots of bidders I have not seen before. image

Check out the Baseball Card Exchange. No more full cases of 78 wax. Steve's supply is dwindling, ya think WE had something to do with this!! Also, that 1976 Topps case is gone too. Did you buy that Lee you bad mofo?

I bought a 1978 Topps 3 box rack case. I sold one of the boxes to Lee and he did mighty well on the grading and selling.
Was kind of tough watching because they WERE my cards *sniff*

  • How much did a rack box from 1978 set Lee back??

    James
  • It looks like Lee did around $1,300 on his 78's yesterday. I would guess that paid for the box and grading fees but little profit. Sure is fun to watch though!!!

After all was said and done, I made a grand total of $15 on the rack box that cost me around $935, but I still have another PSA 10 Brock and the raw singles left that I didn't get graded, including a couple Ryan's and some other stars. My goal was to get a nice Murray and/or Molitor for my collection but all I could pull was a badly miscut Murray and two miscut Ryan's. Considering how I did with the stars and RCs, I can't complain. I think what drove the prices up was the fact that they were all listed together and I alerted the guys who bid on my past 78 auctions that they were on ebay. I know if I'm trying to put a set together I might pay a little more if I have the convenience of buying a large bunch from the same person. Looks like demand is actually going up for this set as this is the third box I've busted (total of 1 miscut Murray, a gum stained Molitor, and a creased Molitor) and the prices of the high grades have been escalating.

Some of the 10s surprised me- I thought the Brock would go higher and the commons would go lower, but with low pop cards you never can tell. Imagine you're picking an all time fantasy team. Would you go for Lou Brock, Doug Rau, Bill Russell, or the great Bob Owchinko? Decisions, decisions.....

I know this is kind of anal but I noticed that you started your auctions off at $1.00 which costs $0.10 more than starting at $0.99. Was there a reason for this? Just wondering as I've been toying with some different things (keywords, starting bids, etc.) in my auctions.

Congrats on the sales. If only I'd have kept that gem mint Doug Rau I got back in '78 in a top loader instead of my back pocket....

Good question wuf, had no idea it cost more to start at $1. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle. What do you think the odds are of ebay giving me back the $20 extra I spent over the last several months?

I didn't know that either and I just happen to start my auctions at $.99. Wow, once in a while I can actually do something right. Wuf do you readily have the fees? If not, no biggie I'm sure I can find em'.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you list an item on eBay, you're charged an Insertion Fee according to the table below. If the item sells, you are also charged a Final Value Fee. The total cost of selling an item is the Insertion Fee plus the Final Value Fee.

    Insertion Fees
Starting or Reserve Price Insertion Fee
    $0.01 – $0.99 $0.25
    $1.00 – $9.99 $0.35
    $10.00 – $24.99 $0.60
    $25.00 – $49.99 $1.20
    $50.00 – $199.99 $2.40
    $200.00 – $499.99 $3.60
    $500.00 or more $4.80
    Final Value Fees
    Closing Price Final Value Fee
    Item not sold No Fee
    $0.01 – $25.00 5.25% of the closing value
    $25.01 – $1,000.00 5.25% of the initial $25.00 ($1.31), plus 2.75% of the remaining closing value balance ($25.01 to $1,000.00)
    Over $1,000.01 5.25% of the initial $25.00 ($1.31), plus 2.75% of the initial $25.00 - $1,000.00 ($26.81), plus 1.50% of the remaining closing value balance ($1,000.01 - closing value)

The Insertion Fee for Multiple Item Dutch Auction and Fixed Price listings is based upon the opening value of your items. The opening value is the starting or the fixed item price multiplied by the quantity of your items. The maximum insertion fee for any Multiple Item Listing is $4.80.

The Final Value Fee for a Multiple Item Dutch Auction, is determined by taking the Final Value Fee of the lowest successful bid and multiplying it by the number of items sold. The Final Value Fee for a Multiple Item Fixed Price listing is calculated per item sold, based on the final sale price of the item.

Thanks shambo, I didn't know dirty Yankee fans could be so helpful. You would have thought I knew all that by now.

    Lee
  • Lee, Us Yankee fans are a good sort once you get to know us. Heck, I live in Virginia and have never been to Yankee Stadium. Not really sure why I like the Yanks??? I have some relatives (in-laws) that live off Bel-Air Road in Baltimore and try to spend some time with them and catch an Orioles game occassionally. I was in the Yard for the big 1993 brawl. I have several pictures of it from the left field club level.

Ahh, your Dick Tidrow comment on the other thread makes better sense, now that we know you are a female and not male (at least this is the first time I knew).image

    Stingray
  • Not sure if you're referring to me or not Stingray? The name can be misleading sometimes but I assure you I'm Male, all 6' 3" 255 pounds of me. I was born in the mid '60's and my folks were big fans of the singer Del Shannon. glad the didn't name me Del !!!

I am so sorry on that one. image

Before there was just an S for your name and based on you funny comments on Dick Tidrow before, I saw your name here for the first time.

    Again Sorry!

I always start my auctions at $0.99 and I sell alot of cards (autos, GU) that only go for the opening bid which generally seem to be player collectors, collectors of players from certain colleges, etc. I've been toying with the idea of starting my auctions at $1.99 to see if I pull in these same bidders who rarely have any competition and will still pop in that initial bid.
  • No problem Stingray. Although I read the Tidrow thread I didn't respond to any of the posts. So you must have me confused with someone else whose name has an S in it.
