New to the Boards

I am a new Member. I have been reading the boards for serveral weeks and have found the informatin very enlightening. I've already learned there is probably no such thing as an "authentic" 52 Mantle on Ebay and that some of the grading companies are rather forgiving on trimming. Look forward to learning more. I am a collector and my son and I have been collecting for a number of years - though I must admit we don't have the ability to seek some of the high quality cards that some of the members here seek.

    If it's too good to be true it usually is.. If you play it safe and stick with graded cards by PSA or SGC your money will always be well spent.

    What do you and your son collect? What's the pride and joy of your collections?

    Welcome and read and learn. I am collecting 67 BB and have learn plenty from others on this board. We all share the common love of collecting and we don't like a scammer. The people on the boards are very good at detecting them. Have fun at whatever you are pursuing.

    Great to see a father and son both enjoying collecting.
    Knuckles hit the nail on the head with the "if it looks too good to be true..........." adage
    The best part of collecting is truly the chase and paying what you want for a card.
    Just remember that there were millions of every card produced over the years (in the mainline sets), so just learn patience and wait for the right card at the right price...

    Primarily collect vintage material - mid grade because of the cost of the 8's and 9's - being 56 years old my interest lies in the 1955 to 1965 area. We enjoy trying to find some good raw cards on Ebay for grading. But we have a lot of the modern stuff too - at least up to 1997. Not as much since then.

    I hope you enjoy your stay here...collecting midgrade vintage is where most of us have our vintage sets - my 66T set is all over the place but looks great in a binder.

    I used to collect with my son till he discovered girls!

    If you want a good modern set next year - the Topps Heritage with the 57T design may be right up your alley! Plenty of trading partners here to finish the set.

    Collecting mid-grade cards is the "sweet spot" in the vintage market. Many graded 5's and 6's look great in their holders and in most cases cost about the same as raw. Are you collecting baseball or football?

    Mid-grade 50s and 60s is where it's at baby. As Mike said that is what most of us can afford.
    Myself, it's 1959 Topps in 7 or 8 for commons, then the 5 or 6 for stars. This way I can make some progress and maybe someday upgrade the set.
    My rule - if it looks good to me then I'm happy!

    We have fun here and try to give each other some good advice.

    Hi, Counselor! I'm glad to see someone newer than me to these message boards! I hope you find it as entertaining and informative as I have.

    I also read the messages for a while before posting a message to get a feel for what goes on and which boards to post which kind of information. I got a little discouraged too when I read of all the high quality cards being chased by a few. Then Lothar wrote something that really clicked with me and I got the proper perspective and posted the following thread:

    There were some other thoughtful contributions, so please check it out and don't get discouraged!

    I collect primarily 1962 through 1968 Topps baseball, so speak up with any input on those sets...
