Willie Mays for half off

I just picked up a 1960 Willie Mays PSA 6 for just over half of the SMR with shipping included. I'm guessing the seller's very low feedback kept bidders away. The seller has some cards in his feedback and it seems strange that someone would scam with PSA 6's, so I'm hoping the deal will go through. The seller also had a Koufax and Mantle PSA 6 that went for well under SMR.

1960 Mays

I do a lot of looking but not much buying, so I'm pretty happy with this one.

I think you're right about the reason for low bidding. He ought to just buy stuff he needs and sell some cheap modern crap until he gets at least 30 or more feedbacks, before running out the vintage. I've got some great deals from low-feedback sellers, too, but sweated until the cards arrived. Used a credit card through PayPal whenever possible.
  • Nice card - nice deal! Low feedback doesn't bother me as we all started with 0, but that, coupled with no paypal scares away buyers.

  • Very nice card AJW. Looks much better than a PSA 6image

Not to nitpick, but the centering on the back looks off, the "d" in outfield is right on the right hand edge as is the last stat boxes. Could have been a 7 with better centering on back??

This is funny. If he had only sold "modern crap" and then dropped this on the Bay the posts would have been the same. He only has sold some cheap "modern crap" and the distrust factor would not have moved. I find it interesting that "cheap modern crap" -- if you believe it is cheap modern crap -- is being used to build up credibilty to sell "fine vintage cards" satisfies you.

It's probably more about the fact that SMR is too high for actual transactions on PSA 5s and 6s from the 1960s, even on major HOFers.

Buccaneer - that is what they say, but is it what cards really sell for? IME it's not.

  • It's kind of like this auction. I was debating whether or not to bid, but too much risk so I didn't. If it comes through, somebody got one heck of a deal. Even if it grades a PSA 5. SMR of 5 is about 50.
