From BJ's most recent email concerning the Set Registry Annual Awards:
This year we will be adding a new award for the "Most Improved Set." We need
your help with this one. If you'd like to nominate a set or if you would like
to let us know about your own "most improved set," please email me!
Most of the past award winners have been pretty static or are being sold off. Any thoughts for a good 'up and comer'?

And my 2004 Mint set dramaticly improved since the last judging, (only 3 Top Pops and it will be a perfect set to date). -
"Most Improved Set." ????
I worked very hard this year trying to improve the sets I have and not venturing into much new territory. I have been somewhat active in the canadain sets, submitting what I had, but just dabbaling. Marty is the king there.
I would be honored with a nomination...................I hope it doesn't sould like I am blowing my own horn, but I guess I am. Thanks, Walt
How about Larry S -- PQ Peace...what a set...
How about Ken -- Fairlaneman for his NB set.
How about my set -- nowhere to #5 in the last 14 months...I think I could be a contender
1968 sets
<< <i>My 1968 Mint set was #1 last year (just by a hair) and still #1 but moved up over a full point in GPA and is a full point above the current #2 set. I added a unique coin in FS, 2 POP 11/0 coins, all made by myself.
1968 sets >>
Clackamas' set came to mind for the reasons he quoted above.
The #2 set behind him rules but was largely due to his "castoffs"
Seriously, he made a lot of the large point gainers himself and moved up the GPA. That's pretty good to do.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
thanks !
I think I went from # 99 to # 1 in one year.
It has been a great experience putting my 6 or so merc sets together along with my 2 type sets which I hope to be # 1 real soon

I'm confused.........Does most improved mean for "Modern Crap"
or a set with some sort of value(meaning) to it ?
In my opinion(and I don't know Jack Schit)it would be a crime to give an award to a set consisting of "modern crap".It would just be fodder for any unscrupulous dealer.

What do you mean by value? Are you talking dollars? Are you talking hard work? What do you mean by "meaning"? Meaning to you or the owner, or to Laura? What the heck is modern? To a 70 year old? To a 30 year old, or a 15 year old?
Its funny, I wonder what collectors in 2205 will consider as modern crap? I wonder, if then the real numismastic saints in 2205 will be those that collected and traded what was already known at the time or will they be people that put aside the finest of the time, assuring that future generations of brats could buy what was already known and poo poo the collection of debit chips.
Honestly all US coinage is modern crap. Go collect Roman or Greek coinage if you want non modern crap.

Then it must be killing you that Richard Green joined you in the Hall Of Fame last year.

I mean, you "Old Crap" collectors spend all that money on "Old Crap" dirty looking brown stuff.
That's just stupid. (g)

Hey Thanks Mike.
I guess the real question is..... Do you really think anyone will even take a look at a puny NB Merc Set, that is completely No Bands ? I don't.... Nice plug though.
Hey by the way. The 25P went from a Pop 3/0 to a Pop 4/0 in the last two weeks. The other Top Pops are holding out though....
Ken
I would gladly view a nice set of NB coins. I simply don't believe in made up strike designations.
here
once the latest purchase is added.
My vote would be for Joshuaaka Barry aka Ally collection aka Walsh collectioin. He has gone from nowhere to #2 in the Lincoln cent series. He has bypassed me in the Indian cent collection and has almost finished a Large cent date collection.
Modern crao is a 2004 mint set,a Sacagewa set etc.Are you listening Walt ?
Clakamas - Do you really think you should get an AWARD for a 1968 mint set?

Stewart.............So whats wrong with a 2004 mint set (with only 3 top pops left to max out the set)? Or to put it another way, out of 22 coins, 19 are TOP POPS. How about a 2000 Mint set then? Or a 1958 Mint or Proof set? Are you going to throw rocks at all of these too? We all collect what we like and what we can. I make most of my coins, so availabllity is some what limited to what I search. I beleive I work as hard as the next collector trying to find gems to fit into my set. Shouldn't that be enough NOT to be considered Crap?
Thanks Stewart, YES I was listening.

I can't believe you are being so egotistical and stuck up to continually downplay "moderns" and claim they aren't up to class.
And, your exchanges are reminding me of a past forum member.....what was his name? Mr Platinum/Triple Xotica or something like that?
I guess, though, after all the money you have invested in your set(s) that the fear of people liking, and sticking to, moderns and not continuing to drive the value of your set ever higher could be scary and maybe you feel the need to vindicate yourself and what you like to collect????
Russ likes moderns, no secret there, but I have NEVER seen him honestly dump on ANYONE for what they want to collect.
Same goes for Clackamas.
Good that you feel you are some kind of KING around the boards though and want to tell people how they should think.

Good choice, but what if "Laurens Lincolns" gets the 25-S?
Do I honestly think I deserve an award? No, Honestly I don't care, my certificate from last year never made it out of the envelope before it went bye bye. Honestly it would be hard to have put more work into a set in 1 year than what I put into that set. Modern crap? Maybe, but the coins are tough to find, not to mention I found a unique coin in my hunt that rocked the Jefferson world. You know Lincolns, and you would love my 68-P. Looks like an SMS, just stunning and a letter perfect obverse. Its more difficult than you think to hit all the different denominations, you have to know them all well. this year I added an MS67 Ken half (11/0), a 68-P Lincoln in 67RD (11/0), a 65FS 68-S jefferson (4/3), 68-D 64FS Jefferson (1/0) and upgraded within the grade both my MS67 Washingtons, all found and made by me.
When people get so bigoted such as Stewie appears to have gotten, no one can use any amount of logic to sway them.
Anyway, the only reason (no offense intended) I would recommend your set (besides it is the one ahead of me and also one of the few I know...I doubt anyone knows EVERY set of registry sets....except maybe BJ ) is what you put in your last line....
You found more than one POP TOP in a very hard year and you did it yourself without flashing tons of money to buy already slabbed items.

XXX - CAN i ASK HOW YOU CAME UP WITH YOUR NAME ? I'm sorry I offended you. Please enjoy your 2004 Mint Set
Bochiman - No I am not afraid of my coins not going up in value. My coins have gone up so much already that I can't afford to collect
coins that I feel are worthwhile. Please don't compare me to Mr. Platinum. He collects "Modern Crap"
FYI - The money I have invested in my sets would not be enough to collect "modern crap" today.
Perhaps you don't understand what it is I am trying to convey. The market for moderns, especially, is a bubble that will break.
As we say in New York ....when the $hit hits the fan....duck for cover. And take your 2004 mint set to the bank !
Brian - Do you know who Laurens Lincoln is and what he collects.Did you know he was the underbidder on the infamous 1963 Proof 70 deep cameo ?Check out his set of 1959 to date Proof memorials.

Mine too.
U.S. Nickels Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes
U.S. Dimes Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes
I have emailed BJ with this suggestion.
I actually collect moderns and non-moderns. I am not a major player in either. I collect because I enjoy it and not because I can afford it. I admire those that give a helping hand and advice and not those that like to tell people that what they like is crap.
There is a difference in being helpful and trying to keep someone from something that you feel will destroy them financially. But, many people on the boards here are adults and can make their own decisions.
So, instead of saying something is "modern crap" and doesn't deserve any recognition, why not just state the positives about the sets that you feel should get the recognition? Why be so negative on people that have a goal and like what they are into?
Btw, never before have I thought you were even remotely like Mr Platinum, but in your exchanges in this thread, his name came to mind immediately after I read what you posted. Not sure if you were trying to be funny or just rude and negative, but, that is the portrait that you portrayed.

Yes I do, I sold him his 58-P in 67RD. I have never met the guy, nor do I know what he does for a living. He has really cooled his jets of late.
Really now, I wonder how a modern mint set or an ASE set can even be considered as collecting. Get real, buy the books and collect early series where you need to understand branch mint strike characteristics and planchet quality rather than only the grade on the holder.
Dismeguy (Gerry Fortin)
Are you as bigoted in your personal lives as you are on the forums?
Do you discriminate against people based on their ethnic backgrounds, as much as you do against us for what coins we choose to cherish?
What gives you, or anyone, the right to dictate what is, or is not, collectable or valuable?
This country was founded on the belief that every individual has the right to think for themselves, and to believe as they see fit.
If I choose to collect Modern coins, that is my choice. If you choose to collect Classic coins, that is certainly your right as well.
We all love our coins. That is why we collect them. If we all collected the same ones, it wouldn’t be much fun, nor would it be the least bit affordable.
Why can’t we all just get along, and feel free to be proud of our own accomplishments, whatever they may be, without fear of admonishment from our peers because we are not their clones.
You have very nice sets, and you have every reason to be proud of them. However, we also have nice, albeit different sets, and we too, have every right, and reason, to be proud of them as well.
You like the Classics.
We like Moderns
Get over it already!!!

LOL, Don't you get it, it is ALL modern crap. 200 years in nothing in coin history. WTF is the difference between 1875 and 1975? Where is the discovery with the so called really "old" stuff? You seated guys are too much. What is new and exciting about seated coinage today? Did someone finally upgrade the same coin that has been passed around for the last 130 years? There is so little to find out, that is actually interesting, about about say "Seated Dimes". Maybe that some proof reverse was used on circs for this date. Hmm, that happens with modern coinage as well.
Discover something new, break new ground. Classics have been so beat to heck for a hundred years that you count die marks to see what order the coin was stuck in. Preserve something for a future generation instead of being mearly the caretaker. 150 years from now what will matter "Joe owned such and such coin for 3 years" or "Joe found, and preserved a unique finest known for a coin"? If moderns are so easy then why are there not MS69's for all dates? Its easier finding an MS66 1883 Liberty Nick in MS66 than a 1968-D.
Don't get me wrong I like all coins, especially the history but I also like discovery and frankly there is nothing worth while to be discovered in the "classics". With Classics there is nothing new, I don't want to be a caretaker, I want to be the discoverer so 150 years from now some classic guy can be the caretaker. Wasn't Eliasberg collecting "modern crap"? People thought he was a fool to pay over face for some coins. Maybe some here should be quoted in the next version of "The Experts Speak"? You know, the book about all the "smart" people who said terribly incorrect things once the passage of time and history shed light on the real truth.
Cheers
Of course, we know none will ever try. It's much easier to talk trash from a position of ignorance.

It is an award for rushing the improvement of a set in too short a period of time whether it be modern or classic.
I am appalled that any of you would be for this kind of award.
This only will encourage more and more registry burnout than ever before. Whatever happened to the joy of the slow building of a set. After all, this is not a rabbit's race. It is a race for the turtles of the world.

Oreville, I will certainly agree with that.
When reading your post, I also thought of "most improved set only encourages people to spend more and more on PCGS slabbed coins at ever higher prices". So, I would agree that there should be no "most improved set" as no one really benefits other than PCGS.

We do to do more to get YN's involved in which "numerical points" is not the driving force; instead explanation of what their set is all about should be paramount.
I realize that PCGS has a separate award for best YN article but this is a short essay approach instead.
PCGS needs to put teeth into their philosophy that while regsitry set collecting is all about awards for best sets, etc. that also awards for most INTERESTING sets should be promoted.
In this mode of operandi, I would like to see PCGS start a registry category of "free form sets" which are NOT rated by points. I predict this would take off like wildfire.
New set categories could be discovered as we experiment with all kind of new sets. Obviously, the listing should be done by alphabetized by poster's name.
I will start a new thread as well so as to avoid getting OT here.
