Georgesthaler

I got this 1½" diameter brass/bronze coin or medal today. I found some websites (most in German), that call it a Georgesthaler and mention that it was used and worn as an amulet. The article mentions copies, as the one that I have definately is. I was wondering if anyone has any information to add...like maybe a better explanation of when were they worn and by whom.
