Rick Snow update 5/31/05

I got a call from Rick's secretary last evening with the latest update on Rick's condition:
Rick received 2nd and 3rd degree burns involving 25% of his body, but most of the burns were 2nd degree. He's had the first of several skin grafts so far and pigskin will be used on a large area of his back. His face wasn't burned but his neck was as was hand, arm and chest as well.
A grease fire in a pan on the stove was the cause. Rick put a lid on the burning pan and tried to get it outside, but the fire spread to his shirt. He was fortunately able to jump into his pool or he might not have survived. He'll probably be in the hospital for a few more weeks and is currently, as expected, in a lot of pain.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Grease fires are tricky business. Having a friend sustain an injury like this forces us all to be better prepared because we recognize it could have been us. The experts say, step one is to turn off the heat source. Don't throw water or flour on the fire. If a larger pan is immediately available, cover the flaming pot/pan with the larger one. Then combat the fire with either baking soda or preferrably a fire extinguisher kept in the kitchen area.
I will confess to having bought a small home fire extinguisher while at Home Depot this weekend, primarily because of this incident and the lack of my own preparedness for a similar event.

Remember people, use an ABC coded fire extinguisher for grease fires.
Our prayers are with you Rick.
Everyone should have a fire extinguisher in their kitchen.
Knowledge is the enemy of fear
I hope he recovers quickly and with as little pain as possible.

FYI
Never, never put water on a grease fire! Water will splatter the grease and dramatically increase the size of the fire. You will easily get burned! NEVER try to carry a flaming grease fire outside. It will quickly be too hot to carry and you will certainly spread the fire over the entire area.
