Question re Collecting Mint Dies ...

I was just wondering if anyone here collected Mint Dies or if there was any market for it. Thanks :-)

  • For the ones with the design completely ground off not really. However with the ones where the design can still be seen...yes.
  • I got 3 -- a 69 Nickel, a 69 Quarter and a NJ Quarter die.

The 69s also came with the collars so they were pretty cool purchases.

I would love to get a Peace $ die!

The mint sold cancelled dollar and five dollar dies used to strike the 1995 and 1996 olympic commemorative coins. These dies were cancelled by machining a X across the face of the die. About 95% of the design is still visible. These are sometimes available on eBay but they are not cheap. The most common type (1996 reverse dollar die) starts at about $700. The other types are rarer and sell for much more. Several people complained since so much of the design is still visible that they could be used to strike "mint errors" so its doubtful that they would ever sell cancelled dies again. Currently all dies are defaced rather than cancelled and no design is visible on the die face.
