My most admirable thanks to all who have served, to make the simple things in life, like coin collecting for example, possible. We, in general, take a lot of things for granted day to day. It's days like Memorial Day that really puts everything in perspective.

Awesome eagle and may I add this/
From a serviceman named Kelly that I meet when I was even younger

I watched the flag pass by one day.
    It fluttered in the breeze
A young soldier saluted it, and then
    He stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
    Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
    How many mothers' tears?
How many Pilots' planes shot down?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
    No Freedom isn't free

I heard the sound of taps one night,
    When everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play
    And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
    That taps had meant "Amen"
When a flag had draped a coffin
of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
    Of fathers, sons and husbands
    With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard at the
    bottom of the sea
    Of unmarked graves in Arlington.....
    No -- Freedom isn't free!!

    Thank you
    RJ

As a veteran of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club, I appreciate the post. But let's not forget the difference
between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. Never-the-less, a most worthwhile post and here's an
old-time photograph of my grandfather, whom happened to be in the 1st air squadron ever formed
by the US Army Air Corp in WWI. He's festooned in a pretty snappy looking uniform for a non-com.

My uncle Dale went to Korea as a Private First Class and came back a Captain.

My now deceased hunting buddy John Slaybaugh earned a Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster at Omaha Beach.

My son Randy was with the 10th Mountain Division.

    And I was a U. S. Navy Hospital Corpsman.

While I am a veteran (US Army, Military Police, 1970-71 with my main duty station at Kagnew Station, Asmara, Eritrea, which was then part of Ethiopia) Memorial Day should be dedicated to veterans who have since died. Included in this group are my grandfather (1898-1978) who saw a great deal of combat (including at Blanc Mont Ridge) during WWI as a US Marine and my father (1919-1998) who served in the US Navy from 1942-1946 and whose last assignment was aboard the escort carrier Kula Gulf CVE-108.

My father enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951. He wanted to be an aircraft mechanic.

He retired in 1973, a Lt. Col, B-52 command pilot.

    He passed away last November.

We laid him to rest in Arlington shortly thereafter.

As a military brat I have the utmost respect for anyone who has served their country.

To those of you who have, or are currently serving, you have my eternal thanks.

To those of you who have heard TAPS in person, for a loved one, I feel your pain. And give my respects.
