Why is there a trade deadline?

Just curious...we always hear about the trade deadlines in sports, but why are they there? I did some light searching, but figured that someone here knew off the top of their heads.

Trade deadlines are necessary to prevent possible collusion between teams/team owners who happen to be in bed together......as in mutually hating another team owner.
