Exactly how tough are these anyway? I saw one today and I was tempted but it needed help because there were preservation issues and because of this, I decided to pass and I think may have made a mistake. Any thoughts? The coin, by US STANDARDS, was in the EF 40-45 range.

    It is a tough date.

Spink prices it at £100 VF and £650 EF. It could be worth about $200-$300 US, if a gVF is merited (EF-40 means gVF to me). Gouby rates it as "R5," or rare.

BTW Gouby's C1 is very common, C2 is common, N3 is normal, S4 is scarce. He also cites R6, R7, R8 and R9 rarity levels.

Thanks for the response Wybrit. I was very tempted and decided against it because I was not comfortable what would happen in connection with the restoration efforts

What was the seller asking for it?

$250 and I was not willing to consider $250. In all fairness, I would have seriously considered $150-175 if I felt that conservation efforts would be effective. BTW, I picked up a 1904 1d to die for from the show today from a different dealer as well as an 1821 6d.
