box bust...87 fleer basketball

maybe we need a "box bust" forum...i really enjoy reading the highlights of the past few 75t, 78t and heritage busts.

i've just opened an 87 fleer wax box from BBCExchange. centering is what may keep some of these from a 10. otherwise, sweet corners, surface and edges. if anyone is looking for some 9's let me know and i'll check what i have when sending in my submission.

box yielded 2 jordans and 1 magic. otherwise, distribution on the stars was on the average of 3 (expected)

the stickers seem to be more difficult to get in mint condition than the actual set cards.

wish me luck.

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

    Congratulations!
Very good overall - as you said centering is an issue. Got any scans - I would like to see what the Jordans look like?

    thanx for sharing

Wow ld, that's one of my favorites. I love the 80s Fleer basketball because the sets are so small and there's a star in just about every pack. Speaking with Lothar, it seems everything is hit or miss when it comes to centering. A box will usually have similar centering for almost every card, so you really need to get lucky and get a mostly 50/50 box to really hit it big. Also, if you luck out and get any 10 stickers you're looking at a big payday, but that's unlikely. Kind of sucks that you only got two Jordan's but if they're nice ones I say you did ok. I think the 87 is a really fun set with a cool design. Even the wrappers are cool looking. Way to go.

here's a few scans (most of the stickers look nice except for an idention that looks to have been made by the packing machine)...don't know how those will grade. scans below depict the 2 jordans and the 1 magic i pulled. these are in card saver i's so hopefully there's no glare.

    LD,
If you have any of the 4 cards I need (and they wouldn't be good enough for submitting) and you'd be willing to sell raw, I'd be happy to buy them.

    I need:
    #25-Brad Daugherty
    #26-Walter Davis
    #84-Sam Perkins
    #130-James Worthy

    James
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I want that 1986 box, too. But, there is so much counterfeit and searched 1986 Fleer out there, how can you trust that what you are getting is clean and legit?

The 1987 boxes go for around a G note - not bad, but unless the Jordans pan out, it is tough to make your money back. The 1988's, which go for around $400-$450 seem like a better buy, as there are a few RC's in that set which are desirable in high grade.

  • Unless you pull some gem jordans in 87-88 or the like in 88-89 key rcs, it would seem tough to make your money back in either year right now, though maybe others have more experience to share here. The raw sets, often including some graded jordans (8-9s), really don't sell for anywhere near what they did a few years ago (though jordan has bumped a bit in smr in recent months).
For me personally, this has been a good thing as I've picked up several sets from each year, along with a nice 86-87 set, at what I hope prove to have been bargain prices.
Nothing like the thrill of pack busting, though, especially at a reasonable price. I remember paying $45 a pack (ouch!) for a handful of 87-88s, hoping for jordan.

Definitely a buyer's market for the Fleer sets. Also a good time to buy the boxes if you have the willpower to put them away.

I will buy any 9 you get from this set. See McGee Collection under the 87 fleer set to see who I am missing. I have some 8's that I would like to upgrade to 9's.

no will power here on this box. i purchased hoping to be able to a) put a set together b) grade and sell the rest (raw/graded) to help offset some of the cost of the box. i know i could have just purchased this set already complete and came out ahead but opening each pack was very exciting and purchasing the set already would not have been the same (i've been fired up about busting this box since hearing of cdsnuts and softparades 78 bust and then balco's 75). plus i know the condition of the set first hand.

i've had several pm's from board members regarding this bust and i will be responding to all and also scanning for those that have asked.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

You may all want to be patient buying up Fleer Basketball....are we going to see a flood of this stuff hit the market with Fleer's downfall? Has anyone heard what may be sitting in a warehouse?
Don't get me wrong...I love the 80s Fleer Basketball....just hope it doesnt bottom out with 800 cases of each year flooding the market.

I have a weird feeling that nedsk could be the boards old friend paoutdoorsman. Both sellers have the same unopened materail. What are the chances? For those who don't remember, he was consigned a lot of unopened material, opened vintage and some modern cards from an estate. Paoutdoorsman was also from Pennsylvania. At least nedsk has great feedback.

You only live once ld. The fun of opening the packs is the thrill and if you get anything great it's just a bonus.

yankee, you make a good point and there is a chance Fleer has a ton of the stuff locked away somewhere and is waiting to release it, but honestly I think that would have happened by now. I know for a fact pretty much everything left over from 86 was destroyed. Still, it will be interesting to see what happens when they go under, but I suspect their brand name is too powerful for somebody not to pick it up. The last time a major player in the card market went down was Bowman in the 50's, so I don't think anyone will be able to predict exactly what will happen. It will be interesting to see what happens to the older Fleer stuff, but I can't see it plummeting- it's just too important to the building of the market in the late 80s early 90s.

ALL WE KNOW FOR SURE IS....

they have SUSPENDED operation.... they have not come out and said they quit or said they wont sell the name to someone who wants to make cards...they have liscenses and I beleive can sell them...though i may be wrong on that...i dont think we have seen the end just yet....

as far as that 86 fleer box going for high dollar...who in there right mind would pay that when u got a less than 5% chance of it being decently centered........late 80's fleer basketball = BEAUTIFUL DESIGN, GREAT PLAYERS, HORRIBLE CENTERING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to buy 4 rack boxes and 5 wax boxes of 89 Fleer to get a decent set of 168 cards....and even then i had to go outside of that to find a couple others!!!!! I got one and I gave one to milbroco for helping with the 84 topps football commons.

I doubt there are cases of 1986 Fleer Basketball hiding over at Fleer HQ. Remember, these cases are worth around $100,000 each - and someone would have made sure that they cashed in on that by now.
