Could it be the Ike Dollar?
I have seen them in circulation more than the Sac dollar and I can't imagine Morgan or Peace dollars ever circulated very much.
Anything predating the Morgan was probably too rich for most people.
Of course, if you go by sheer numbers, it would have to be a recent coin.

I read that the gold dollar circulated quite extensively in several sources. Makes sense when you think about it. The 8 reals circulated more and had legal tender status until 1857 but wasn't really a US coin.

I would still have said Morgans just because of the huge quantity of them minted. Even a fraction of those circulating is a lot of $$.
