bulk coin lots

What is an average going rate for bulk world-wide coin lots by the pound? I got one of my co-workers into collecting, so her husband, went out and purchased a 60lb lot. The dealer he got them from claims there is silver and gold in the lot, but I have my doubts, but I also have not seen this lot. She is not this much interested in coins and may be possibly trying to sell part of it. I have no idea on what to offer as a fair price. If it is mainly Mexico/South America/Canada, I realize the price/lb would be quite a bit less.

Thanks.
Doug

I bought a nice mix from a forum member a couple of years ago and it was $8/lb. I think it was 3 or 4 pounds total. I used to see nice mix lots going for up to $10/lb, but as you say, they had very little, if any, Canada and Mexico included.

I no longer buy in bulk, so maybe someone else who does can give you an update on prices.
  • From what I've seen it's about $6 per pound but it really depends on the contents (if they are known). A large amount of common Canadian cents would definitely be a letdown for many American collectors hoping to get a more varied and worldwide selection.

  • It depends if there is silver in the lots.

I saw some dealers selling lots with no silver/gold for about $8/lb.

  • Just bought a couple pounds off of ajaan and I am very happy with the assortment. A few mexican coins, but as I'm just starting out those were necessities anyway. There were some really cool old UK pennies (1910, 1913 and 1918).
