Has this card been to the barber?

This card looks great, but conventional wisdom tells me that since he references PSA in his text he would also know that the card is much more valuable in a slab. That leads me to wonder if Floyd the barber got his mitts on this one.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Assuming that this scan is 100% in size the card is 4 pixels short left to right which = 1/24 of an inch. If PSA tolerance is 1/32 of an inch then this card would be considered "trimmed" left to right. The card is only 1 pixel short top to bottom which is only 1/96 of an inch.

I just downloaded the JR Screen Ruler a few days ago and find it very useful but I'm still a novice with it. Any of you guys/gals who have mastered using a screen ruler care to confirm my measurements? It would be helpful.

I can't imagine trying to sell this card ungraded if it is "untrimmed" It would bring double or more in a PSA slab than if sold raw especially if graded a 7.

  • Actually, after re-doing my math the card is only 1/60 of an inch off left to right. So that would be within PSA tolerance. I've been out of school to long... need to take a refresher math course.

  • For some strange reason, the 66 Mantle is a card that comes back a lot of times as miscut. Not tampered or trimmed, but I guess that the machines had a hard time cutting a straight number 50 off of the sheet that year............

You didn't post the auction here so just from what you stated here, go with your "instincts" which I think are correct, and pass on the card.
  • Shannon,

Do you know for fact that PSA has a 1/32 tolerance? I have never heard that before and was told by PSA customer service rep on the phone that there is no tolerance. I've even had cards that measure come back as trimmed. How do download the screen ruler? Thanks.

The tolerance is for miscut cards not trimmed ones. Cards can be different in size from the factory. 1961 is notorious for this.

    Good for you.

  • Thanks Shannon. What other sets are notorious for this, and what have you found is the best way to tell that a card is miscut or cut short at the factory or just hacked? Are 61's notorious becasue of presentation sets? Thanks again.
