I finally came to this conclusion:
These items the mint makes are always known early on to us in the numismatic field. Kinda like a Doctor that knows about the latest Staten drug. We know what it is, the mintage the price etc. This is the first group. Within this group some buy some do not. Those that do not are sometimes over thinking the situation. They would not buy one why would anyone. Enter the second group:
The second group of buyers has a vague knowledge of the US mint but does not go looking for stuff, they may be on the mailing list but throw the mailer away as "junk mail" Finally they see this set on TV or something and want one weeks later. They find out they are "sold out" and not knowing issue price they buy one or two.
The Third group are the folks that are not on the mailing list and do not know how to get one, they go to ebay or ask a friend or call a coin shop. At this point id the "price" seems reasonable they will buy one. These sets are nicely packaged and look expensive. So when you hit them with $70.00 they may not flinch.
Group 1 sells to group 2 and 3 and without fail rarely have a problem when a true sell out occurs.

the first day coin covers went on sale in April. They will lift the limit on June 7th. That's way to long and I think the mint figured that out.

The Jefferson Peace Medal included here is a silver-plated bronze replica of the medals commissioned by our Nation's third President in 1801. Those medals were struck in three sizes and it is estimated that the Corps of Discovery passed out several hundred of them to the American Indian leaders encountered along their journey westward. The Peace and Friendship handshake design featured on the reverse was subsequently used for 11 of the first 12 Presidential medals produced by the United States Mint.

If ever a sign of the top of a market, when people are willing to pay double in the aftermarket on something they could have bought at the offering price from the Mint, the end must be near. This is like the IPOs of the late 90's all over again.
Edited to add: I ordered three sets, one for myself and each of my two children. My son is fascinated with Lewis and Clark and I want to keep interested in the history, not the modern commem.

I sold all the 2004 sets I bought so I didn't have anything to compare it to.
So I think we can conclude I had no idea what I was talking about

Based on the above, I would dispute your assertion. Though I DO believe the market is about peaked, I'm not sure the aftermarket on mint products is a reliable indicator.
