WASHINGTON - Malcolm Glazer's contentious takeover of famous English soccer team Manchester United gained an audience with the NFL's finance committee yesterday during ownership meetings.
Glazer, who owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and once tried to win an expansion team for Baltimore, must account for Manchester United's announced plans to build a casino and entertainment complex near Old Trafford, its stadium.
Although the NFL bans owners from holding stakes in casinos, league spokesman Greg Aiello described the development as "a blip on the radar screen" in the two-day meetings at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
The finance committee heard a brief report from NFL attorney Frank Hawkins, who asked for related documentation from Joel Glazer, Malcolm's son. Joel Glazer declined to comment as he was about to enter a secured area.
Aiello said there was no conflict with cross-ownership or the league's policy on debt ceiling.
"The only issue is our policy on ownership interests and gambling casinos," Aiello said. "Frank is looking into that. Joel indicated to Frank it'd be explained and there'd be no implications to our policies."
Malcolm Glazer recently acquired a 76.2 percent stake in Manchester and has initiated a formal buyout offer to the remaining shareholders as required under British law.
Fans at Old Trafford can place bets on their team's games at kiosks in the stadium operated by Ladbrokes, a British gambling company. Manchester does not own any portion of the business, but Ladbrokes does pay a sponsorship fee.
Two weeks ago, the team announced an agreement with Las Vegas Sands Corp. to build a casino and entertainment complex near its stadium. Team spokesman Phil Townsend said Manchester will not own a stake in the facility.
"The plan is that Las Vegas Sands would run and own it," Townsend said. "We would provide the land ... [and] get a revenue stream from LVS."
Meanwhile, opposition to Glazer's takeover continues to run high in England. Shareholders United, a Manchester fan organization, issued a statement about the $490 million in debt Glazer is taking on to finance his purchase:
"Manchester United is in peril as never before. No other football club has ever had a debt burden of this size and there is no real prospect of clearing this debt for many years to come."

And Andy Reid will be serving food (and eating twice as much as he serves) after he's run out of town after yet ANOTHER super-sized choke by Philly fans. Reid will still whine about being second-best after he gets demoted from head server to busboy.
Reid, asked to comment, could not, as he had philly cheesesteaks stuffed in his mouth.
Yo, you got somethin' against cheesesteaks?"

I don't care for them one way or the other, but obviously Reid has been getting more than his fair share of em
