Minor League set grading question (1980 Ripken)

I have the 1980 Cal Ripken Charlotte O's card (and the entire set, TV version). I actually got it at the ballpark when I was 10 and managed to keep it in good shape all these years.

WHat is the protocol on grading this card. I always see the prices listed as "set". I really don't feel like getting the mascot card graded image

Also, if selling the Ripken, would I have to sell the set as a whole or would a buyer just want the graded card?

Thanks for any advice/knowledge. This is my first post here, but I have been lurking for awhile. I have just started a 1969 registry set.

Hi welcome, I like both old and new cards. Doing a 55 topps, and 05 heritage. Could you provide a scan of the Ripken? It would give people a beteter idea of how well you preserved it. The best bet, if Ripken was in nm or better shape would be to sell the set ungraded with the a lone graded Ripken.

Me neither, I think it might grade a 6. Not sure if grading is worth it, a few other may be better than I on this card.

There's nothing preventing you from sending this card in by itself to be graded. You usually see minor league cards priced as a set price simply because they were usually only sold in set form. The PSA monthly price guide lists a few minor league singles from PSA 8 and up. That Ripken you have, if I recall, has always been one of the most sought-after cards of his. It's one of two Charlotte Os cards from that year but the "TV" version is much more scarce. I'd definitely get it graded. I too have never seen one until now.

    Here's a PSA 8 that recently sold.
  • thanks for the feedback all. I knew it was a rare card. I put it way in a holder about 15 years ago. Not sure if I could sell it as I really did get it at a stadium giveaway when I was 10. My 8 year-old sis got a set as well, but they didn't survive image

Nice card. I would have PSA grade it. There are a lot of reprint issues with minor league cards and the PSA will instill ocnfidence on potential buyers should you ever decide to sell.
  • I agree with that point. Why would anyone believe me about getting it at the park.

btw, fun tidbit is that his name is spelled Ripkin on the back.
