91 Stadium Club - 1984 Topps Cello - 89 Score FB Box Questions

Local shop just got 5 boxes of 91 Stadium Club football (Favre RC and that elusive Ricky Watters I need for my All Time Rushers set) They are asking $70/box on the Stadium Club football which seems like a decent price. The 84 Topps Football is cello and is at $20/pack. They have one with a Marino RC on top for $80 and one with the Marino IA on top for $39. They also have 89 Score football but I don't recall the price on it, I want to say $9/pk.

So my questions are...

1. How many Favres could I expect out of a box of SC?
2. What is the condition like on 84T Cello? Is it better/worse/same than rack or wax? I've never opened any.
3. Were there collation "issues" with any of the above that would make me want to stay away completely?

I know the shop is not allowing people to search the cello packs and they claim the only "searching" they did was looking for big cards on the top/bottom of the cell packs and that was it.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

The $70 on a box of SC isn't bad, but you're really better off buying the cards raw/graded. If you get shut out on Favre you're screwed as that's the only saleable card in the set. You can expect 1-2 of each card, but corners are always an issue with the early SC cards. Still, if you want to have fun cracking a box, that's not a bad way to go with minimal financial risk. What I used to do when looking for a specific card is to tell the dealer to set the box in front of you and keep busting packs til you get the card you want. If you get Favre in the 2nd or 3rd pack you saved yourself a lot of money.

The 84 Topps cellos are a little high, especially since you know one Marino is already gone. You can expect about 1.25 of every card in a cello box and condition can be great if the box is case fresh and hasn't been handled much. I'd shy away from them though.

The 89 Score box/pack price is something I've never understood. They are very easily searchable and you can get about 3 factory sets for the price of one unopened box which yields about a set. Try some of the reputable internet dealers and see if they have any unopened case-fresh sets.

yeah...84 topps are horrible with centering...i am working on a 84 topps football set and its RIDICULOUS....i have help from friends here on the boards though image

89 score...well....get this- i got a opened factory set for 5.00 that doesnt have the sanders, aikman, and a few other rookies. I have a psa 8 sanders which i think is a 9 whichi got graded back in 1999 and bought in 1990 for 20 bucks. I think im going to bust it out and just keep it raw with the set....

just this weekend at a card show i picked up a nm-mt raw aikman rookie for 10 bucks...the corners are gem...the centering is 50/50 TB and 60/40 to the side...hence the nm-mt grade im giving it. Now i just have to pick up a few "cheapo" rookies and i got the set for alot less then a box!! i need Andre Rison,Deion Sanders, Chris Chandler...and maybe Chris Carter...ill have to check.

I'm with Lee on the 91SC, the quality control is only fair. I think 1-2 is the norm with the occasional 3 - which is a nice bonus.

Having said that - what are they booking for - it seems that everyone who wants one has it. Now, if you are looking for some excitement and the hopes of finding a 10? Well, good luck.

Let us know how it goes?

The $80 is pretty good for the Marino rc on top. I'd look at the condition of the top card in the pack. If the centering seems ok, and the corners appear sharp then take the plunge. $20 is no bargain, but is reasonable. Please let me know if you pull any mint Dwight Stephenson rookies.

Alright. Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll pass on the boxes. I got excited looking at them as I don't see that stuff locally very often and the prices seemed reasonable but I hadn't checked some of the online dealers much so I wasn't sure.

  • The 1991 Stadium Club boxes can be had on eBay for about $50 each. The problem that I have found with the 91 TSC set is that because it is so large, that you don't often get the cards you are looking for. I have busted product from BBC Kid, which I would never claim to search packs, and have pulled 0 Favre RCs.

Two boxes of 91 sc yieled 2 Favre's. But that's about the max I think.

84 is tough because of the snow.

89 factory sets are more common than wax.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
