My first Darkside purchase - whaddya think?

I know it's only Canadian (that's almost like U.S.....sorry Canadian's, I'm just kidding). Okay, technically it's not my first bit of darkside material; I purchased a "complete" set (96 coin - 12 country) of Euros and I owned a Pillar dollar at one time. But, I have a "junky" little darkside collection sitting in 2X2's in plastic album pages. I vowed never to buy any of the coins but just get them from the pocket change left over from friends' and family's trips. When I saw this coin within a gentleman's collection at our coin club that he was trying to sell, I couldn't pass it up. It was the only coin that had a 100% natural look to it, no visible problems, and it seemed like an overall great value.

I think the coin was originally undergraded at VG. I think it's a F12. What do you guys think about my newest addition to my darkside family?

When I started, such a coin was a real thrill... now I know there are better examples for close to the same price. Nice coin though...image

  • That is a nice 50c piece. image
    Welcome to the darkside.

I think the grade is at least F12, maybe F15.
I am still learning to grade Canadian coins.

Out on one of the other boards (I think Coin Talk?) a couple of other people have noted they think the coin is no better than VG. I've seen VG coins before and I would disagree, but that might just show how little I know about this grayside stuff.

I have Carlton's grading guide and that coin looks Fine. Nice coin. I love the Canadian 50c pieces, I only need one more, the 1890H, to complete my set.

  • Of the 2 sides the reverse grades closer to FINE. There is just too much wear on George V's face and robe to be anything but a VG. But it's a very nice VG with good outer details!

Why not bring extreme micrograding north of the border and call it VG-11.5?

Nice 50 center! It looks close to VF to me.

Look at the 2 parallel lines at the bottom of the crown, there are supposed to be 5 diamond shaped jewels seperated by 4 pairs of round dots. If 6 of those dots show it is VF, I see 5 in the pic so my grade would be F15 (also note that HRH's ear is full and not blended into the hair). The reverse is definately VF, nice details in the crown and the bow tie. Most people look at the leaves 1st, but this design element is usually flat and misleading.

Canadian Trends are F C$35, VF C$175 - my estimate of value is C$75.

I think VF is pushing it, though I don't doubt many people would offer it as such. On the other hand, potential buyers would call it VG at best. image

I really appreciate all the responses. It's funny, but I had more fun and passion buying this "low dollar" coin versus a $400 purchase. And, I admit that my grading skills are far from perfect.

Technically, I think the consensus the coin is a VG10. Market-wise it might be a F12+ due to originality and possible strike issues. Of course, we're typically talking only about a few dollars difference or so between grades. It's not like an 1893-S Morgan Dollar where a grade difference can be thousands of dollars!

    This has been fun! Thanks.

don't know the grade, but I love the originality of the coin!!! that's a look that seems to be getting very hard to find these days where everyone wants wild colors or white and to heck with the original grey/black/white looking coins....

I just got a response from Don Hartlaub of Falcon Coins. He was selling several Canadian Halves at the coin show last weekend and I asked him his opinion (of the scans, because I forgot to bring the coin to the show):

<< <i>On first glance, it looks like the coin would grade F15. It has four strong beads in the crown and portions of two others based on what I can discern from the pics. It looks pretty problem-free from what I can tell! >>

On a different forum a number of members were calling this coin a decent VG. I can see why by looking at the inside of the leaves (towards the center) and the center of the crown, but the rest of the coin doesn't show VG type wear. In the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter but it's fun to analyze just the same.
