An end to advertising in this forum?

It happened just a few days ago in the Registry Forum LINK!

About 10 posts into the thread the big man himself stuck his head in and laid down the law. No advertising posts and a ban for those who ignore the rule. The majority of people who frequent the forum were not for the change. (Actually the majority didn't even see a problem at all) However once the subject was brought to his attention, Mr. Hall let the rules be known.

Mention was made of the Weekend Swap threads that are used here on the Darkside but even that idea was not allowed to be an option for them. Let's not let it happen here. Having to dredge through all the posts on the BST board to find a couple of Darkside items would quickly become too much to deal with.

I can see it easily getting out of control even here. There are those who post here only when they want to advertise something. Others whose sig lines, showing what they have for sale, are always longer than their actual posts! The ads can be good for both the buyers and the sellers as long as they don't become spam.

Any ideas on controlling things before they get controlled for us? Or are you like those in the Registry forum who didn't see a problem image

I bet there is an interesting story behind all that anger! image

Meanwhile this thread is about posts advertising things for sale ... not about the Registry.

Yeah, I would hope we could just do things per the typical Darkside protocol. People for the most part tend to get along here. Not only is that unusual compared to the other CU boards, it's unusual compared to almost any other boards I've seen on the internet.

I think the reason for the removal of the threads on the Registry board is that the "look what I'm selling" threads were becoming so abundant that they were pushing legitimate threads off of page one. At any given time, you could look on the Registry board and most of the threads were trying to sell something and were not only not discussing what was happening with the Registry Sets but most of the threads were by people who were not even owners of Registry sets - they were all people trying to sell thier wares to the registry owners.

I don't see it as a problem here on the darkside. I believe that there was a poll or thread in which most felt that it wasn't an issue here. I guess it could turn into a problem if people didn't police themselves, but I think that it's just fine now.

I really don't see us having that problem here. IF it did get to that point I am sure many of the members here would put a stop to it and give the offending sod a piece if their mind!image

image Seriously though, I can't imagine the Darkside without the weekend swap, just as I can't imagine it without ancients, all the magic is in the blend! image And really, people selling their duplicates at $0.75 a piece aren't here to make money, how difficult can this be to understand? Our weekend swap is like a flea market compared to the top $$$$$ deals of the other forums, Steve was right, we actually don't exist. image

  • I do not see that problem here. Nobody that I have seen posts here just to sell coins. I think if we just plod along as usual we will be fine. We do not need Big Brother watching over us. We have created our own nice little community here and we police ourselves just fine. By the way it did not bother me anyway on the Registry side, just do not read the thread and how hard would it be to scroll over to the next page. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff.

I don't have a problem with the occassional SSP post here. I like seeing what others are selling and the prices they are getting (or not getting) for their wares.

Although to address the concern about wading through posts in the BST Forum, I always (and suggest others do as well) include "DARKSIDE!!!!" (or something to that effect with more or less exclamations image ) in the title of my posts on the BST forum. So, if all those who were selling world coins did the same, all one would have to do is a periodic search in that forum for the word "Darkside" to see what's available.

I think we are cool here on the Darkside. I think the fact that we have two regularly posted threads on the same day every week for wanted/selling keeps the SSP threads to an extreme minimum. No ones threads are getting pushed down by selling threads. And, IMO, this is the single most civil forum I've ever seen!

I agree, we seem to plod along, mind our own business, and police ourselves.
One trend I have noticed this year is that there is less "penance" for SSP. Penance used to be standard along with SSPimage

good point goose, you're right! Maybe we could make a Darkside SSP rule that if you sell something to a fellow forum member via SSP on the Darkside you have to cut the shipping cost by 50% or something like that. Kinda like putting a quarter into the "cussing cup" every time you say a swear word at home image

No need fror rules, but indeed, penance used to be standard with SSP. If people think that it's too many penances, maybe they should cut down the number of the SSP threads. image

The SSPs are a big part of what makes this fourm so special. I buy a lot of stuff from other members and it is almost always very nice material. I really hope nothing changes.

I sure don't mind the SSPs and swaps, etc. I've purchased from a few of the darksiders due to posts or links in posts. I'd be bummed if they cracked down on us over here. image

The only way I wouldn't mind would be if they would create a BST for world coins only. Even so, I think things are just fine.

I think that would be fine, our own BST forum, but beyond that, there is just no way to stay on the first page (even set to display 40 threads per) with all of the Liteside activity.

I hope things stay the same here too...it has worked so far.

image I've managed to pick up some nice coins from folks right here on the Darkside. I don't wish to see that changed UNLESS we can add a strictly Darkside BST forum.

    Long live the SSP!

I have bought great SSP'ed coins from aethelred, ajaan, syracusian, spinaker2000, rhound1977, python, coulport (where is he, anyway?), farthing, jamminj and even maccrimmon image ! I am happier with the coins I have gotten from these fine folks than with most purchases I have made outside of here.

I apologize if I left anyone out of that list. image Please PM me and tell me off!!

SSP's and selling in general on this forum is done with restraint and class.

Civility, friendship, and education abound in virtually all these posts. When a member posts an SSP there is almost always a bit of education or humor in the post and some SSP's have developed into excellent threads on their own.

The ability of this forum to self-police is a measure of its maturity and quality and as such we can be largely invisible to people who job it is to deal with problems and complaints.image

    the Darkside is fine...

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • image I have no issues with the SSP or the 'Swaperoo' here, and honestly never look at the BST much cause of such few Darkside listings.

A Darkside BST would also be fine by me, but not necessary, I like it here in the world and rarely venture into the other forums...
