I agree. Rubber bands are high in sulpher. Stretch one a few times and you can smell it.

I've seen rubber band toned Morgans before, but usually they have had a broad stripe. If this is a rubber band, a very small one was used. May be worth it to buy this and get a good look at it.

While I also agree that it's probably a rubber band, I happen to be conducting a long term experiment on this very same thing.

Almost five years ago I put two flashy new Lincoln cents in a container of rubber bands that I have in my desk drawer at work. In fact, I even stretched a rubber band around one of the cents four times. I fully expected the coins to show color within a month. But to my surprise, both coins are still full red although the flash has dulled a bit.

Maybe they no longer use butadiene rubber or maybe they're using something other than sulfer as a crosslinking agent. But the smell is no different that any other rubber band that I've used in the last 30 years.

Would be of a similar material as wood/canvas and might explain the banded toning.

Besides, I haven't had a stretched rubberband last more than a year without breaking.

Rubber band stripes are usually impossible to remove. I tried to have NCS remove one from a Peace Dollar and they could not get it all.

Here's a coin from a stack my Grandfather wrapped in a red newspaper rubberband. When I went to remove the band, I found it had stuck and corroded into the coin. It had been there so long, it was dry and black. I did a lot of soaking and then did a few times with washing/soda and aluminum foil conservation method to get the crud to fall off. The rubberband left streaks in the luster as you can see and corroded deeper cracks the silver in several places. I ended up selling it on ebay to get $ for other coins.

I wouldn't ever put rubber bands near coins after seeing this one.

I was recently trying to find out how some SAEs tone so fast and get certain colors, I had results much like that from a matchstick. Not the most likely thing to have toned the Morgan, but a possibility if the man smoked a pipe or fine cigars!
