Westfalen Notmunzen

One of my favorite side collections is a set of the 1921-3 "horse" tokens from Westfalen. After gathering most of the denominations/varieties I have three questions:

#1 I haven't been able to find a high grade example (undamaged unc) of the 1/4 and 2 million tokens. Are these more scarce than indicated in the catalogues or has my timing just been bad? (I don't have the 5 Mk Tombac either, but gather its pretty scarce)

#2 I understand that there are proofs and silver versions of this series but haven't ran across either. Anyone have information about these?

#3 Since I had it available, I'm using the Max Frenzel catalogue for my set. The 10,000 and 50 million mark tokens come in two varieties: "mit breiten Randstab" and "mit schmalen Randstab." I gather this has to do with the width of the rim, but, after handling several of each denomination haven't been able to figure out the diagnostics. Anyone have info on this either?

Thanks!!!!

This is a nice series but aluminum coins don't lend themselves well even to the slightest wear. I think this one is an AU but not sure. It is classified as #645.9 FUNCK 2000. It is the only Westfallen notgeld I own although I've got some nice porcelain pieces from other german states..
I wish I could answer your questions but here's a bump-maybe someone else knows.

By the way, forgot to set the white balance on the first image-some difference huh?

  • These are abundant in Germany, I had no problem finding a nice example. Maybe try German eBay to get one.

Thanks for the comments. I have started looking on ebay.de and it for a few things and guess I'll continue to watch.

Anyone with a notion about questions 2 and 3?

    Thanks!

#1 - 1/4 and 2 million tokens shouldn’t be scarce in unc condition. The 5 Mark tombac of course is scarce and expensive (Mintage = 4035)

If you need any of these coins, I will gladly help to find them here in Germany

#2 - proofs exist and versions in silver also (Abschlag in Silber). In my opinion proofs are scarce, “Abschläge in Silber” are RRR. None of them are listed in my cataloges.

#3 - Thin rim or thick rim, if you are unsure to identify the varieties, use a precision balance:

10.000 Mark, thick rim, (vom Stein’s head high relief) = 31,5g

10.000 Mark, thin rim, (vom Stein’s head plain relief) = 33,5g

    50.000.000 Mark, thick rim = 31,5g

    50.000.000 Mark, thin rim = 33,5g
